Where to fish this saturday: fly / spin
Submitted by Jelle on Wed, 2012-11-07 10:54
After having to regretfully move from Port Hedland to Perth, having to regretfully leave the boat behind I'm now trying to get a fishing fix in the Perth area.
I know someone who is a keen flyfisherman and who has recently bought a 4.2m tinny and we're planning to have a go saturday arvo.
As I am completely new to this scene, is there anyone who could give us a push in the right direction? Ideally we will need to combine fly and spinfishing into a trip with reasonable chance of succes for both. Not too fussy about species, just after some fun.
Any hints will be more than welcome..
Thanks!

Looking at the weather at
Looking at the weather at this stage for sat arvo it'll be too blowy for inshore bluewater, so unless you can switch to a morning session instead, a couple of river options are likely the best bet for you.
If you want to fish the Swan, then fishing any shallow banks and flats around the CBD will see you in with a good chance of flatties and bream, with choppers at sunset unless it an overcast breezy day then you can often catch them right through the day.
Alternately the lower reaches of the river between Claremont/freshwater bay and Freo have the same options as above with whiting, skippy and other oddities like juvenile sambos at this time of year, look for weed beds and/or reefy areas and structure.
Hope that helps give you a jumping off point.

Hey Gav, thanks for the info.
Hey Gav, thanks for the info. I was indeed already contemplating the river after having checked the weather. It'll be sort of a reckon session anyway.. Eventually we'll find our way, but it's always good to get some feedback from the more experienced locals. My lightest outfit is a 5-10kg rod with a 5000 stradic, so I'll best pop into the tackle shop for some lighter gear :)
Cheers!

No worries, your spot on
No worries. You're spot on there-you won't be wringing much fun out of river fish with a 'Hedland light' outfit! Get yourself a 1-3 or 2-4kg outfit and you're set.
That south wester looks like it's gonna crank in saturday arvo, I reckon you're best off starting out around the CBD or a little further up like Maylands, and if the wind's still annoying you, you can head a bit further up river where it's more sheltered.
