if you ever get into a sticky spot and you need to alert someone to your presence you can never have enough . the last thing you want is to be on the ocean at night and have fired your last flare then half an hour l;ater you see lights on the horizion and you have nothing in the locker to shoot and raise the alarm with. as has also been mentioned above a flare can be a good ace up the sleeve when confronted with a group of drugged up yobbs who are making a lot of threats about boarding your boat

The new rules say you can keep the old expired once as long as you have a fresh set onboard aswell, that is unless you have way to many.
For disposal see here >> www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/19165.asp#Disposal

Using them
If you have to use them , use the old ones first, saving the newer / better ones as the last resort.
For disposal take them to he Dept of Transport where you licence your boat, they will take them.
