What's you favourite beach rod?

I was reading some heated debates about the pros and cons of G Loomis surf rods over Lamiglas rods in a US fishing forum today (Boy I am slack) and it peaked my interest.

My personal favourite beach rod is my Daiwa Moonraker. It is a great rod with a whippy action that can help you cast a mile. However, it does have its shortcomings with regard to casting heavier baits.

I know there are a few keen landbased fishos on here and I was wondering what rods are, and have been, your favourites?

All the best, Colin Hay

I have a moonraker as well

Tue, 2009-03-10 18:01

I have a moonraker as well and really like it although i do agre when fully loaded with a whole herring and 6oz sinker i have a bit of trouble getting into it probable more to do with my action though.Put a 85gram+ metal on it though and it cast a mile.Oh and most guy hate its hi mount but it doesn't really bother me.

Also have a penn 6811 big game surf which is pretty awesome and unbeatable for the price cast well and its nice and light

Looking at buying something about 10ft now for casting popper around reefs with 6kg line looking at the tireljo, daiwa sensor surf or a daiwa seajigger

Hi Nelly I had the reel seat on my Moonraker lowered

Wed, 2009-03-11 06:51

I find a little more comfortable if I am in for a long session. Totally agree on casting the matals. The Moonraker sends them out like a bullet. Come on salmon time.

I have a Loomis and Franklin

Tue, 2009-03-10 18:00

I have a Loomis and Franklin beach rod.
13ft three piece with a light and a heavy tip. Had it modified so it has two reel seats on it, one for high mount, one for low mount. Just for those times i prefer one over the other.

Absolute dream of a rod, i use it for throwing lures all the way up to throwing big baits for sharks. But most of all i like it because it breaks down into 4ft sections and came with a gnarly rod tube so i can take it with me on planes when i go travelling quiet easily.

I'm an Ugly Stik man.....

Tue, 2009-03-10 18:27

I have 3 Ugly Stiks.. 9', 10' and 12' Platinum. They all have a place in my vehicle when I venture out. I get most use out of the 9' and 10' but the 12' comes in really useful when bigger species and large seas are around. For the larger rods I use my Shimano 6500 Baitrunner and Mitchell 80S Orka Pro. I use smaller Shimanos and braid on the 9 footer.

I am no purist these days. What works for me is good for me.

Cheers, Vince

I just find that i can cast

Tue, 2009-03-10 21:04

I just find that i can cast bigger weights/baits out further using heavier line when the reel is low mounted. Plus i find when fighting bigger fish/sharks its nice having the reel low to wind so your arm isnt getting tired from being held high and winding. Same goes if i am casting big metals off southern beachs, just tires me out less with it being low mounted. Takes a bit of getting used to casting though as your bottom had controls the release of the line instead of the usual top hand.

I am with Buz on the G Loomis

Very happy with it and the three tips are great. Perfect for changing around also when the swells are up and waves craching or when you want to fish different weights.

I just have the low mount but use the egg beater on it as more comfortable to fish and fight with.

Got a great workout at Wagoe over xmas and will also be getting another at easter and also Quobba in July (so good to carry a tube down goat tracks without worrying about damaging it).

Good action  on it.

I prefer the 1 piece

Wed, 2009-03-11 07:56

I cant complain with my old 1 piece 12' ugly stick. Never had a problem with it strongest rod i've owned. That coupled with the penn 850ss sees me fish trouble free which ever beach i decide to go. Just recently added a custom 10' snyderglas 1 piece to the arsenal so will be looking forward to giving that a whirl this weekend.

I have 2 custom Snyders 13'6 1 piece rods

Wed, 2009-03-11 11:53

I have had them for 8 years now and have never let me down, i use 14000 spheros's on them now with 50lb & 30lb braid and I can cast them a mile. They can cast a 10oz sinker and a big bait for Mulloway with no problems. I have found the main reason people have problems casting big rigs is that their traces are too long which causes them to spin and twist in the cast and therefore lose a lot of distance. My hook trace is aournd 30cm and sinker trace about 40-50cm I find this helps quite a lot.

Rods

Wed, 2009-03-11 18:03

Have 3 beach rods and they all are Butterworths[made in QLD]and over 25 years old.1=8132,1X8144 and the brute a 9150.All except the 8132 have been re runnered more than once The 9150 was given to me about ten years back, without runners or tip,set up as a low Alvey mount.Bit of tweeking and it was fitted with a high mount as well.
I paid around $130 for the 8144 in the early 70s and its caught mountains of fish since usually with a Mitchell499 or an Abu7000 on it.
Wouldn't think of replacing any of them.

been using an ozflex su400

Wed, 2009-03-11 19:15

been using an ozflex su400 for a while now,but recently changed to a daiwa 13ft sensor surf, fine piece of machinery for casting nice, and light to hold, only complaint is i didnt get it custom made, but for 80% of my beach work i use my 10ft xzoga (still waitin on the 12ft).the xzoga blanks are second to none, for castin and holding on to all day, handle a fair casting weight for a slim blank, also throws a little slice when called for.
must say i creamed my jocks when i first handled a moonraker, but heard a few stories of the lack of ability to cast with a big lead and bait,so i got the surf(while waitin for the xzoga)..
im a little puzzled why one piece rods are still sold is there any advantage to a one piece?

I have A 25 year old one

Wed, 2009-03-11 22:16

I have A 25 year old one peice 12" Guts Butt Ugly Stik if it an odometer it would have clocked over a million casts by now I reckon.I love this rod but its a bit heavy now days.

I have a(16year old I think)one peice 14"6" 7wrap Synder Glass with a deep spool Alvey nothing is safe when this bad boy comes out it will launch a house brick and a herring just shy of RottoWinkI love this rod but its a bit long and unruly now days.

I have a 4 week old 2 peice 12" Xzoga hasnt seen any surf action yet but a few outings in the harbour.A 4oz and a mulie man I have to look out for the fork lifts on the other side I have no doubt the rod could handle one but theres not enough line left for the first run after the cast. I love this rod slim ,light weight ,strong and aggresive but at the same time sensitive

I cant wait to spend a balmy autumn evening at the beach watching the sun go down with my new Japanese Geisha.Look out Salmon

Cripes I think I need help.

my fave would have to be

Thu, 2009-03-12 19:35

my fave would have to be about 35 to 40 yrs old , no markings on it at all 12 foot glass (burgandy sort of colour)with a wood butt on it and matched up with a sigma shakespear 080 , it just doesnt get much action in perth as all fishing metro is from a boat, it has been responsible for my biggest land based fish 21.5kg mulla and numerous 2kg bream, it has been rebuilt a couple of times and needs doing again
