Hard time deciding setups!! someone with exp needed!!
heys guys, im posting from sydney and looks like you lot know what your doing! maybe someone can shed some light? its doing my head in...
Im planning to head offshore quite a lot this coming season chasing yellowfin tuna and maybe get some late marlin if possible!.
Just wondering what you guys take out with you with another 4 blokes on the boat... cant bring the whole tackleshop..
Ive got a 5000FA stella on a 4-6kg magnum butt incase some smallish yft or albies show up in the distance ........
8000FA on a trevalla butterfly jig rod to bottom bash with and jig some yellowfin.
20000FA on a smith jig stick to troll and cube up with.....
Seem about right? anything to change? Should i be chucking a small skirt on the 8000FA and maybe a big skirt / hardbody on the 20000fa? im pretty new to tuna , mainly just jig for kings or downrig in the harbour for rats

i wouldnt be using a spin
i wouldnt be using a spin reel for trolling if it was me .. the drag is too hard to change on the run (i usually set the lever drags lighter for the strike then bump it up when i pick up the rod) plus capacity is a little small on the spins (unless you run 20m nylon shock leaders over heaps of braid) i would suggest a nice o/h just for the trolling and leave the spin reels for b/b and jigging ... ive got the 20000fa plus a z4500 saltiga for my b/b and jig plus a penn international 50tw and tld25 for trolling.

When i go bluewater i take a similar setup
5000 stella on a pe3 jig stick
8000 stella on a bigger jig stick pe 5 gear
and a 10000 stella and my GT rod
can use the 8000 for jig, bottom bogging even trolling if i have to
the only other combo i might take is a 4000 size shimano reel on my 20lb diawa advantage for flickin soft plastic around, but the 5000 stella combo can be used for that if i want
oh one more thing, i know a few guys that use a 20000 for billlies over here, mind you they ar fishing for saily's not marlin
spin reels for trolling is ok, shimano drags are awesome, i havnt had any dramas i dont do much bluewater trolling and it saves taking yet another combo
sounds like you already have it sussed

If you're serious about your
If you're serious about your trolling, overheads with mono are the standard but personally I think it's way more fun using spin gear and braid.
We used that at the Rowleys and caught all our pelagics with it, Wahoo, YFT, Sailfish etc..
You just need to make sure you don't have the drag set too high for the strike.

Listen to these guys
Thats all I have to say. Oh but fishing is about finding the barriers. So go with the Stellas and drag the YFT to hell!

hehe, when a big YFT wants
hehe, when a big YFT wants do dive there's nothing you can do to stop it, even with Stella 20000 and 100lb braid.

All i can ad is that if you
All i can ad is that if you are going to troll braid and expect to get a Marlin then use nothing under 300lb leader and make sure it is pretty long. The drag on PE8 is huge and pops 100lb like cotton if you get a decent fish on that takes a long run.I learnt this the hard way
