What is your favourite lure colour?
Hi all, I have had to be around home quite a bit lately and in my spare time I have decided to do something fruitful and get back into making some home made lures.
I was wondering what everyone's favourite lure colour or colour combinations are, for:
1) Mackeral;
2) GTs;
3) Tuna;
4) Salmon; and
5) Tailor
I know there are a lot of "sales and marketing" colours associated with many of the lures today, so if you could describe that colour or colours as close to the standard "rainbow" colours it would be greatly appreciated.
Personally, I love the old red and white combo, or a gold and brown combo.
Looking forward to your input,
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Laser pro
Laser pro 190 in red and white for macs has allways worked for me col. When i worked at the islands we used to use a hook wrapped in red rag for slimmy cod and they just inhaled it and the good old white head jig is just a freak for any fish.

Question
Question for you Colin.
Is red and white such a reliable colour or is it that a huge number of people only tow that colour so thats why you see it so often?
And to answer your question
1) King Brown Halco Max or 190DD
2) No Idea - But maybe whatever Jay and Brad use would be my starting point
3) Pink Squid or Xmas tree
4) Gold Twisty
5) Gold Twisty

Now that is a tester Tim - a bit like is time travel physically
possible?
From my own experience, I have found red and white reliable for me. But then again, when I first started throwing lures there wasn't too many colours to choose from - I think there was a red one, or a white one.

IMO
the actual lure itself is generally more important than the colour. If it swims well and imitates well, I dont think the fish is generally to fussed about the colour - particularly the pelagics you mentioned.

agree with tim, alot of
agree with tim, alot of people say red and white, so others jump on the band wagon, yes it can be a reliable colour, but if thats all you are using then obviously it will out fish other colour. i personally dont really use red and white, i prefer other colours myself

That's another interesting theory Huggy
But haven't you found that some days the fish will only take one colour, even if you have tried the same lure in different colours. And some say that dark coloured lures work better in low light or murky water situations and visa versa. But then often it really comes down to someone's personal opinion or their confidence in a certain lure or colour.

No
Not really for the fish you have outlined. If you put two different coloured F18 bluewaters out to troll for mackies, I doubt that one would be better than the other - hasn't been in my experience.
Other species yes. Rainblw/brown trout are a good example. But trout are a completely different (and often frustrating) ballgame.

That's good input guys and it helps with what I am doing
At the moment I am experimenting with a whole range of colours, so I won't be too far off the mark then.

I think
I think red shows up as gill flare a fish in destress trying to get breath and white is a colour of bait fish we tryed dif colours of rag but red was the one.

Mackies - Red and white laser pro 190 with upgraded splits and trebbles
GT's, well you can never have too many colours, although i am a bit partial to something with some red in it, or purple, or orange, brown, blue, green hmmmmmmmmm like i said can never have too many poppers. Better try them all!

lure colours
1. Mackeral- King brown, Yellow fin, Pilchard, Red Head Chartruese (green)and Chrome yellow. my colours depend on time of day.
2. Gt's - any pyscodelic colors with red underbelly
3. Tuna- Pilchard, Yellow fin, red head pink/red/black skirts
4. Salmon- blueish pilchard clours or silver (high speed)
5. Tailor- as above for salmon
got to mix em up and find what is turning the fish on though
red on the chin/gill/bib area is supposed to represent a stressed fish as stressed baitfish flair there gill plates exposing the red gill, hence red colour under the bib.

Colours
Mackies, mostly redheads but having said that, we got hits on the blue mackerel pattern as well. Oh, and Halco's chrome pink is always in with a chance. I think if you happen upon a pack of macks they'll pretty much go anything in the trolling spread.
For southern blues, pink or green/gold skirts, for yellowfin, for me anyway, Rapala Magnums in the above mentioned blue mack pattern (they actually call it silver mackeral)
Salmon..any minnow/metal/popper with some blue in it. Green is next best. After that, natural colours which closely resemble mulies. Again really, like the mackeral, if there are a few fish around (which is normal) it becomes a competition thing and just about anything will get nailed.
Tailor...same as for salmon but in the Peel system as of late I've been travelling pretty well with predominately gold X-raps and Smilin Jacks.

Hey guys Can only really
Hey guys
Can only really talk about macks and tuna as that is all I really target locally. And I assume that we're only talking about minnows rather than pushers because that opens up a whole different world
For macks I've found the Chrome silver multi or the Chrome pink to be dynamite. King brown and the flaming hot is good as is the bonito mentioned below. Red and White has never worked for me personally. Not in deep diver just standard or 2.5m. Or the new Bluewater F18 in a Blue/silverish chrome finish ( don't know its name). Since November of last year I've landed over a 100 macks and lost too many fish (and lures). Been a bloody good year
For tuna the Bonito absolutely nails it. we were at the Abrolhos last year on a mates charter boat and out of 5 lures being in the water at the same time this lure got smashed without any other lure getting a look at. 14 of us on board and we all caught at least 2 tuna on this same lure/rod/reel combo without a single look at the other lures.
Cheers Mick

I only fish for two of the
I only fish for two of the species on your list...
For GTs, I find that the colour is not nearly as important as the action. Nearly every trip they prefer a different colour so it pays to have a big variety. But I've found that if the fish are there and they're hungry the'll eat just about anything you throw at them.
For mackies, well I don't troll I only jig but definately my favourite jig colours are pink or pink/blue.. dynamite.
EDIT... whoops, didn't see your last post Colin. Guess that means I'm out... I don't usually fish with minnows.
