What Would You Fishwrecked Members Do
Submitted by Howard George on Wed, 2013-04-24 17:52
Got a phone call today from a local newspaper wanting comment about a baby dolphin that was caught up in fishing line and needed to be rescued and I guess everyone knows where this was heading.Tried fobbing the reporter off onto Recfishwest but she wasn't having a bar of that so I fell back on, education and making people aware of the importance of picking up their rubbish when heading home etc, etc, but just from her line of questioning she wanted to stick it up a rec-fisher and get a scoop. I'm just wondering what would you guys do and say.

Good move sidestepping the trapdoor.
Ive been misquoted by the press and it wasnt much fun. Even had written statement re-edited to get a better spin.
Very wary these days.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

No winners
No winners when it come to the media. They will twist anything you say to how they want to push the story .
I would try not to comment . But even then they could use the fact you made no comment. Like i said ( No winners ) JMO ..

DO NOT Trust the media
From personal experience the media is trained to write stories that will make the public read or watch (eg bullshark that was baited for three hours off Hillaries). So no matter what you say it will be translated into a story that makes the average Joe Blow fisherman look bad and the marine park option look real good. My personal experience was a 5 min interview 2 min with other team members and a full page in the Sunday Times was written about things that either didn't exist or were only known by immediate family who were not interviewed. You did the right thing being very vague. JMO

I hate the media.
Just get their name, number and who pulls their chain. Then phone them back from some one elses phone.

I would have steered them
I would have steered them over to the fish kills at the flood gates Howard. You know compare 1 baby dolphin to the amount of fish that have perished there mate. Its all about the spin.

I Was Suspicious Wiilo.
It ran through my mind Willo that this was a ploy from the environmental groups responsible for the fish deaths trying to take the media attention from their own miserable performance and put it onto rec-fishers as neglecting their duty of care of the marine environment but having read the article in todays paper ( BDTimes page 2 ) it seems I might have dodge a bullet and the reporting was quite fair.
