What would you buy

If you had 35 giblets to spend on a new rig what would you choose out of these selections?

The Sea Fox is actually a 216 - the ad has the wrong description. Motor is a 4 stroke.

www.boatsales.com.au/boats-for-sale/private/used/SSE-AD-3203419/2005-QUINTREX-570-SPIRIT

I've sold the cruiser so am on the lookout for something more dedicated to fishing since the missus won't go on the boat. I like the Sea Fox and it is built in the time frame after they built their reputation for rubbish build quality so not worried about that.

My intended use is offshore on the 3 mile and beyond and also now exploring further afield since it won't be tied to a pen. I would like something that won't get me too wet in the chop and would be comfortable with the centre console if it is big enough. The kicker is I need to stay under the 2000kg towing limit of the family car.

If you have other recommendations I'm happy to hear them.

Wouldn't you be better

Wouldn't you be better getting something with more deck space for a dedicated fishing boat like a centre console?

Id love to have 35k for a boat!! However i dont think id be looking at either of those if i did. If i was to have weight restrictions i'd be looking at a second hand plate ally, potentially bigger boat for less weight. If i needed a mix between fish and play id look at an older bar crusher/surtees CR (Cuddy/Runabout) configuration. I'd certainly go four stroke aswell...

Anyway, all my opinion... Happy days ahead for you anyway!!

 Only bar crushers in that

Sat, 2015-01-24 18:33

Only bar crushers in that price range seem to be pre 2004. Trying to stay with a boat under 10yo. The hulls now are very different to the older style.

Is go for the Ali with the suzuki on the back, probably a better all rounder, the fiberglass one has no protection from the sun, and very little deck space for fishing/family.

I thought about something like that too. This one caught my eye. Pot winch, structure scan, new motor, etc

 I have a 'dual console'

Sat, 2015-01-24 20:37

I have a 'dual console' seaswirl so I'd vote the seafox all day. I'm never gonna sleep on the boat so having the front open to cast off or drink piss in suits me perfectly. Plus there is plenty of room on the rear deck. Get a cover for that front section if it doesn't have one so you don't cop cold wind rushing through while underway and you're laughing.

With 35g my money would go

Sat, 2015-01-24 21:13

With 35g my money would go on

- A used but in good condition 20-21 foot aluminium runabout make (because I prefer ali + more room with runabout make) repowered with a newish 2 stroke or 4 stroke (2009+) for about 28-30g

- Some money on mods: maybe rocket launchers if it doesn't already have them etc, ~ $2500

- Some money on a good sounder/ GPS combo, maybe $600 for Sounder and $1800 for colour GPS with chart pack

Would be a good boat for fishing but also light enough to tow and doesn't need a pen <2000kg, and also enough protection from the sun/ wet chop for the missus.

Good luck mate!

Need a cabin for kiddies

Centre consoles or dual consoles, bow riders aren't practical

zooms link kill both of them.

I'm a big glass fan with lots of horses for the extra carry weight

I went and saw the sea fox

Sun, 2015-01-25 16:43

I went and saw the sea fox today so it is real. I even climbed all over it! It needs some love no doubt but the motor looks pristine (I know looks aren't everything but only a mechanic can tell me anything else) and it started first crank. He was willing to accept a few G's off so that will be enough to tidy up the sun shade and install a furuno sounder. If I get serious I'll get a mechanic to inspect it and take it for a sea trial.

I just need to see what else is out there at the moment and decide what way forward. Glass or Ali. Leaning toward glass at this stage. The Sea Fox is under my 2000kg towing restriction. Rod storage is an issue but we should be able to address that.

Sun, 2015-01-25 17:10

Yep id go the Quintrex too! The only thing I don't like about the quinnies is the non sealed deck. It means you get bait, hooks, sinkers swivels, leaves and any other crap that ends up on your deck down under your floor in your hull. And that's not a good thing.

But Appart from that they are great boats for an ally.

Made for the North Sea in the UK and top speed about 18 knots with the 85hp diesel sounds like my kind of cruising! ha ha

What did you settle on? I saw the Sea Fox going through Rocky this morning. Was a nice looking boat in the flesh so to speak.

Was the sea fox that far

Sat, 2015-01-31 13:44

Was the sea fox that far south? wow - a long way from Yanchep.

I'm still in 2 minds about it - it seems like a really nice boat but I would need to get some bar work done to make some suitable shade for the kiddies. That would then eat into my electronics money ha ha.

Still waiting for the new owner to take delivery of my cruiser so just want to make sure that is all finalised before I spend his money.

Yeah, it was the sea fox, don't know if it the exact one, but it looked very similar. Saw it around 08:30 and it was heading up toward Palm Beach or Point Peron ramp.
