What is the weirdest bait you have used to catch a fish????

Was talking to my old boss last night and he was telling me that he just done a 5 day Abrolhos charter with Top Gun 2 charters and said one day the fishing was very slow.

He was munching on some lollie snakes, when he decided to put one on the hook (A Green one) he said.

The end result was he hooked the only fish on that drift and it also was the biggest spanglie for the whole 5 day trip and of course it was on the lollie snake..

what is your unusual bait???

Perch on marshmallows

Fri, 2013-05-03 20:35

On a 3 week walking trip in the remote Kimberley region I used marshmallows to catch perch on 5m of 6kg nylon line taken as an emergency handline. They were beautiful cooked in the coals, especially as we had been living on dried lentils and chickpeas for days as we had to carry all our food and gear on our backs.

i recently made a lure out of an orange reflector that i pulled off my pushbike wheel. tried to catch coral trout with it but didn't work. a few squid were interested but not keen enough to latch on. have caught plenty of bluebone groper on white bread. fried rice worrks really well as burley

Some old timers in NZ used to catch Snapper on kerosine soaked rags. Have seen it for myself when I was younger in a place called the Tamiki River.

short length of straw over a hook for salmon/snook or piece of rag as well, corn kernells are often used for carps in the murray here in SA

Have also put a barrel sinker on the line, slides down onto a hook, scrape sinker surface with a knife so its silver and its a good/cheap lure.

Caught herring on hooks with no bait just retreiving it.

Want to get one of those Simpsons three eyed fish lures and see what I can catch (K-Mart used to have them in the Simpson Kiddy rod/reel packs but I can't find them anymore).

Makai did you cook the Perch on the coals or the Marshmallows (or both)

stayed at a bed n breakfast in england when i was a kid they had a beautiful "strictly members only fly fishing" lake next to it , snuck down there at dawn and fossicked round till i found a couple of little frogs , pinned the poor thing on under a bubble float and caught two cracking rainbows.  hid them in a jacket and ran home..

Black bream burley

Sat, 2013-05-04 20:55

If you are one of the crews that like to anchor up to the river bank while chasing black bream try to do it under or as close to a peppermint tree. Give the tree branches a good shake every so often to dump the ants that live them in to the water, turns blackies on the bite in no time.

 Have caught tommies(herring)

Fri, 2013-05-10 06:36

Have caught tommies(herring) on plastic tube, soap and metal foil on a hook. I think they will go anything that is moving if the conditions are right. I once caught a surf salmon on a bit of old rubber thong!! Rigged it up with a running sinker for casting weight, and used a slow to medium retrieve. Wasn't even casting at a school of fish either.

Old fart

Sun, 2013-05-12 10:26

had a lady on board many years ago and for a joke said, "you'll catch whiting with pieces of tomato," she sat there for about 3hrs and caught nothing while everybody else caught whiting.

We were towing old farts daughter around back of GI on the biscuit in a bay, stopped for lunch of course somebody looked into the clear water and saw a school of whiting, no bait, so out come the cold meat in the sandwiches, salami, rootwurst and cold sausages, we caught a good feed of big fat whiting and a couple of KGW.  Not a bad day without any bait hahahaha

Unusual Rig

Tue, 2013-05-14 10:11

Not exactly weird bait, but the rig was unusual. Once caught a shark off the Smokey Bay Jetty in South Oz on a handline on one of those squid jigs that you put a mulie on. The shaft prevented it biting off. Still have the jig with bite marks all over the shaft as a souvenir.

Squid.... I know thats not

Squid....

I know thats not unusual to use as bait..... but it is when you catch a huge Sea mullet!!!!

Bugger was nearly 3 foot long, big scales.... Was about 10 years ago and still stuns me to this day!!  Was caught near Turtle Bay of Dirk Hartog when I was on the Snapper boats!!
