For a tailor combo that will
For a tailor combo that will throw mulies & most tailor style lures around I'd go with a rod about 8ft long in the 3-7kg class & a cast weight around 40g (your 2-6kg will do at a pinch if it's over 7ft long & can cast 30+g). A 2500 size reel can work but is a little small to recover line quickly if a big tailor runs at you so I'd up that to a 4000 size reel. 10lb braid should be fine.
The combo I just bought is an awesome bit of kit & will throw baits or lures at tailor or salmon in any location you care to choose. It's a Starlo Classix ShoreSpin 902 (2 piece 9ft) in the 5-10kg class & a cast weight of 15-45g, it's matched with a Shimano Sedona 4000 & 15lb Power Pro braid. I can belt a popper out a country mile with not a whole lot of effort. All up that set up cost me $195 & I probably could have got it cheaper if I ordered it off the net instead of going into a store.

If the mulie under the float
If the mulie under the float doesn't work lose the float and use a small running sinker to a set of gang hooks, and one of those lil green glow sticks if you're fishing at night. Cast the mulie out, count to 5-10secs and start a slow retrieve.

if there are plenty of people
if there are plenty of people around using burley, like say north mole, i like to use a 3 hook gang attached to 15lb leader tied to 4kg braid with a simple beauty knot on my 2-4kg bream rod... heaps of fun... always have the most luck around sunset

8ft rod is huge I wanted
8ft rod is huge I wanted something like 7ft. I think the most weight I'll be casting is 10-15 grams, kind of want an outfit that will make catching them abit more of a "challenge" then just punching out a cast and reeling them in easily.
does a glow stick attract the tailor? i thought people used them ontop of floats just to see the runs

Just bait cast mulies, nip
Just bait cast mulies, nip off the tails so they cast well without spinning as they go thru the air and you get much further then.
cheers

You would be gratefull for
You would be gratefull for the extra length especially if you want to do a fair bit of float & lure fishing from the beach or reefs. The extra length makes casting much easier when you have a meter or more drop between float & hooks & it will punch out casts that extra bit further when lure fishing. On the Starlo combo I mentioned tailor are still a real challenge & you can feel every little move the fish makes, it's far from just reel them in fishing. Besides, you can easily run 6lb or 8lb braid on the longer rod if you want to increase the challenge.
If your dead set on going lighter then perhaps it's worth looking into some of the longer bream rods? You will have the light line class & cast weight you seem to want but will also have the extra length to give you longer casts & easier casting of float rigs.

The rod sounds fine, if
The rod sounds fine, if anything upgrade to a 4000 size reel, if you're a sports fisho, stick with the gear you've got. You'll be fine. Check this link if you still have doubts, we caught salmon and tuna to 7kgs from higher rocks than what you'd find metro. We were landing 7kg tuna on 1-3kg bream rods and 3-5kg shimano jewel, anyone whos used one knows they are flimsy as hell anyway. I had snapped a 6-8kg starlo stix, which was way too heavy anyway, never liked the rod in the first place, and a 4-6kg nitro earlier in the day. The light gear was prefect.

Got a Jewel 662 barra, that
Got a Jewel 662 barra, that rod has quite a few good tailor stories to tell from the past 18 months I'v had it. Caught a nice sized one with it tonight as well as 2 bango's. Great little rod.

New gear
I'm running a a 10ft 2 piece shimano Catana with a 4000 Shimano Sahara loaded with 8 pound braid. Berkley Vanish leader from braid to a box swivel followed with a 8kg mono leader to a set of 3 ganged hooks.. Works a treat! Maybe a small sinker if need be other wise I try and use as little weight as possible
