What should I save up for?
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-06-05 15:44
I have finally given up the “durries”, also known as the “coffin nails”, “oily rags”, “smokes”, etc.
So I am looking forward to having a bit of extra cash (At $12 a pack it should add up to a bit of extra cash).
I am putting the money I am saving into a special (aka secret, not known to the better half) account. What do you think I should save up for fishing gear wise.
All input would be apreciated, Colin Hay

thanks Mick. Unless I spend all my money on fishing - which is likely (Lol).

Good Job Colin!
Mate, it's hard to do and the money you save is great. Cold turkey? I used the pills - champix - and would recommend them to anyone. Only used them for about two months then found I didn't even think of it. Get yourself a boat mate - I did!

Good work quitting
Good work quitting Col!
Make sure your fund is to something you really want, so you're never tempted to not take up your old habit. Hehe, imagine thinking about buying a pack of smokes, then thinking, nah, I want a stella more.
Though, fishing is an addiction in itself, and can cost quite a bit more than smokes, haha.

Thanks Matt That is exactly what I am doing
Everytime I get tempted, I think that $12 for a packet is a start towards a Stella, or a charter trip to the Montes or a boat.

Good Work
Congrats on the quiting, stick with it though. As for what to save up for, bloody hell the list is too long LOL. Target a species you haven't caught before and buy the gear to match that. Then every time you catch one you can thank the smoke-free life you are leading for the fish.

Good idea on the target species. Maybe a PNG bass, or a big GT would be good to aim at.

The charter is definately something I have been thinking
about scott. It helps to picture in mind some fantastic spot and heaps of fish when I get some cravings.

Thanks guys
That is definately on my planning schedule. I might even be able to afford to stay somewhere fancy to spend my nights rather than the tent I was looking at staying in.

They seem a fair way off, but when you look at $12 a day, maybe its not so far - at least for one of them.

Lol zen When's your birthday. You can have my old lighter (Lol)
The only thing I think I have used as often as a lighter would be a knife and fork. Getting fitter is my next target.

I have quit before when I wasn't really committed, but I have set my mind this time to do it and to reward myself with something I have always wanted or wanted to do.

I have been off the oily rags for 5 days and I have saved $60. Add that up over a year and I can really get some good gear.

im a nurse who has spoken to
im a nurse who has spoken to lots of patients about quiting smoking and help them through it and i have to say the most successful method by a long way is champix its a 3 months course ( and u do need to do all 3 months) go and have a chat to ur trusty gp ( hopefully u have one) and get a scipt from him he /she will be stoked ur making this positive change in ur life and as an added bonus the thought of a fishing treat from the money u save is a very strong motivator. With all the money u will be saving roughly 4k a year wont take u long at all plus hopefully now u will also enjoy many many more yrs of fishing to come. If i can be of any assistance please dont hessiate to contact me always happy to help someone make a positive change in their lives.

Yeah I would love to do the round Australia trip again OT
Took 12 months to do it last time and still missed a lot of places, so it would be good to fill in the gaps.

bok bok bok
i give up the lung busters about 3 years ago, after smoking heavily for about 8 years. i got hypnotised!!! worked a treat!!! my brothers and his friends all got hypnotised by the same chick, and it worked for them, so i thought why not.
really, i didnt even want to give them up because i enjoyed them, but knew i'd have to do it sometime, and thought sooner is better than later. one 2 hour sesh later and i havent touched one since (FYI neither has anyone else i know that went to the same hypnotherapist).
anyway, i was sucking over a pack a day, and was used to spending that money. so i got a loan, and bought my boat, without even feeling it in the pocket. one life changing thing to another. i use it every week of the year!
my bottom time and depth whilst has spearing improved, hangovers are easier to deal with (although slightly more frequent these days), and i can chase the dog further at the park.
the only down side is i cluck like a chicken for an hour if someone says "tangerine"......... damn hypnotherapist

I just did it the old
I just did it the old fashioned way. You know a big weekend bender and you never want to touch a cig again for your next 5 lifetimes. Cold turkey is often easier than it sounds!

I haven't given up completely
but have cut down from a packet a day (40) to 3 pkts a week, my problem is when I get bored I reach for the ciggie, but hopefully this time next year I'll be smoke free, as I don't want to put anymore weight on going cold turkey as I love lollies and that would be the thing for me no ciggie give me a lollie, I'm stretching my ciggie's out longer and longer so far its working for me, last week only bought two pkts still had one over. Thank god I don't drink much as ciggies and alcahol go together. Colin I sure can see the difference in my purse going from 7 pkts a week down to 2-3 pkts a week.
I'd like to save up for a nice trip to Exxie with you guys next year, so I'm slowly getting there, yes if we come we'll be also tenting, cheaper.
Good luck Colin .... one powerball I think we'll all be outa here trvelling to beautiful spots in WA then off to Tassie for some nice trout fishing then NZ for the same minus ciggie's.
Bob did it cold turkey and he knew he was over ciggie's when he went to the pub and didn't want a ciggie with his beer.
