At what point does stopping on someones spot get ridiculous
Submitted by mooredog on Fri, 2015-04-17 14:04
Last weekend we were drifting over a patch of coral 79 Nautical miles from the Dampier Boat ramp, and approx 13 west of the tip of the monties.
This bloke with 3 deckies drove from over the horizon (monties side) and stopped within 100m of the spot we had been sitting on for 2Hrs.
At what point does courtesy not kick in. I realise I don't own any land out that way, but there are some right fuck wits in this world.

Or......"We just spent 3
Or......
"We just spent 3 hours steaming to our secret spot 13 miles west of the Monties. When we finally got there, we found that some asshole was sitting right on our spot. Out of courtesy, all we could do was stop 100m away from him until he left. I realise I dont own any of that land, but it pisses me off that all my secret spots are now overfished"
Just sayin ;-)

Yep
Yep, most of these pinger threads are ridiculous. Always 2 sides to the story. Some times 3 or 4 sides.
Come fish metro waters, people think 20m is still not close to you. The 100m you were given by the other boat was a courtesy rarely seen in Perth so I don't understand your problem with them. Not so long ago it was common to approach other boats to say hello and make sure they were OK. Now you are a pinger and get abused and slandered all over social media.

Last time I was out of
Last time I was out of Seabird there was a boat, probably from two rocks, literally on top of one of my shallow marks. he'd obviously found it and good luck to him. We just fished a couple of hundred metres away as a courtesy. Still picked up fish. My only problem is with courtesy, I reckon minimum of 50-100m meters is the berth you should give any boat out there. I don't call it pinging, I reckon it's just pig headed rudeness to come and sit on top of someone. Plenty of ocean and fish out there.

Problem?
So if there are thousands of spots, what exactly is the problem? I think we are getting a bit precious if we aren't comfortable having another boat fishing 100 metres from us. Or have I missed something here? Did he interfere with your lines, or yell abuse, or have 1990's pop music playing loudly?
Just my 2c, I expect not everyone will agree.

If there are 1000's of spots
If there are 1000's of spots (and there is a ridiculous amount of ground in the area in question) why would you need to get that close. The idea of travelling that far is to have it to yourself. If I was heading to a spot i wanted to check out and saw that somebody was already there, I would take the bull by the horns and have a crack at something else, well away....who knows what you'll find. Says to me that these blokes had no idea to scope the place out for themselves.

My personal take on it is if
My personal take on it is if they were going to their marked spot then no probs. 100m is plenty of room (unless it is 100m astern of your drift then that's not cricket). If you're there to make sure you get the only fish within 100m of that spot then probaby better to purchase at the fish markets (cheaper and a sure thing).
If someone sees you haul up a monster from the deep then parks next to you then that is what I call a pinger.
I'm only new to the game here in WA but go to a spot with good fishing over east and everyone makes room. Not uncommon to see 30 boats fishing in close quarters on known good spots.
A few times recently I have headed to what Navionics says is a feature of some sort only to find a boat already there. I have no qualms in moving off and leaving them to it if it is a small area. If there are a few boats already drifting a spot then I'm ok to join in and make sure I am to the side of any drift they are already on.

If I'm headding to a spot
If I'm headding to a spot and a boats with in a mile il go sum where else let alone 100m he might have a patch close and not even know there's ground where you pull up. But guarente when you leave he will go have a look.. It's a massive ocean! If you have a good sounder and have a look around who knows what ya might find

Mw and my pop were out at 4
Mw and my pop were out at 4 mile in busselton andchoed up and started fishing within about half an hour we had 6 boats Including 2 that were diving within about 30m in every direction arround us but I'd hooked up on a cuppla big rays so there were some angry rays down there for the divers to play with

have a good one

I'm on FW record of being on
I'm on FW record of being on the side of "its everyone's ocean". but having said that, if someone is already on the stop I want to fish I keep going. well, the other day in monkey mia, headed out to the second channel and passed two other boats on the way fishing other ground. went another half a mile or so to where I wanted to fish. Noone else there, great. Did two drifts. got a school maccie on the first one. went to move back to the top of the drift to find one if the boats I had passed had moved over and anchored right on my drift line.
now, I wouldn't have an issue if he wanted to drift that line, but anchoring on it, prevented me from fishing the spot that I had been and wanted to continue to fish.
I went along side and asked politely as I could if they realised they had anchored on my drift line, to which I got a shrug of the shoulders. I moved 150 m to one side and drifted again and started catching flathead, not the four blue bone and cod they ended up catching.
they were camping right behind us at the caravan park so I spoke to the skipper afterwards and his attitude was it's everyone's ocean. I pointed out that by anchoring he made it his bit of the ocean.
anyway. I don't think k he saw my point if view, but it was all very polite, not abusive. and we seemed to get along ok for the rest of the holiday. for all I know he thinks I am a prick, but as long as he thinks I am a polite prick, I don't mind.

First post’s a pinger thread
First post’s a pinger thread that’s a big start , welcome to the site .. if his intent was to ping you then he’s a wanker but is he still a wanker if he also knew that area and after 79 miles just wanted to fish the vicinity from 100m . Did you end up with a feed anyway ?

Who Cares
At risk of upsetting a few, me personally if I was 79NM off anywhere I would go say gedday just because I like to talk to like minded people. If someone made the effort to travel 79NM I would not have a problem with them coming within 100 mtrs unless they intended to shoot me! He may have intended to go to that spot all along and might put a post on here how "I travelled 79NM and someone was in my spot" At the end of the day even if we ping a spot (which I do not) we can still only take the bag limit which sustains our fisheries for everyone.

The intent of the original
The intent of the original post was more the fact that you can't even go that far, in a fish rich area and not get an area to yourself. (The reef is approx 3 miles long)
i genuinely hope they got a feed over there trip, but I would not go within a mile of someone else whilst out there, but maybe that's just me.
obviously I have lived up north to long, and follow the morals my old man taught me

Mooredog
good on you mooredog.
More people like you on the ocean would make it a better place.
Its a massive place out there and no need to fish on top of someone (unless in cockburn sound).
Just ettiquette to give some room IMO.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Agree with Mooredog . Plenty
Agree with Mooredog . Plenty of ground out there without having to go near each other but some can't find new ground without finding other boats or aren't prepared to even look. I like the company I choose and not the blow flys that fly in and sure there's two sides the the story who was there first and who got there second.

The more boats, the more burley
I don't really mind pingers as they help me burley. In most cases I seem to get the better fish in any case and probably thanks to them burleying. I would say that in 20m plus water it should not make a massive difference as it would maybe in shallower water where fish may be spooked easier.
As a rule I do not ping and will rather move on if somebody is already at my target location. I normally do my homework well before going out and make sure that there are alternatives. It also provides me with an opportunity to discover new spots (which have been discovered by countless others).
Rather enjoy the opportunity and out fish the pinger so that they move out of pure frustration.

i dont own a boat myself, but
i dont own a boat myself, but i suffer the same thing when fishing from the beach. its a different kettle of fish in most regards because theres only so many spots, that are accessable by 4x4, on our vast coast line. whereas with a boat you can just about go anywhere dependant on weather, depth and tank range.
i can gaurantee your not the only bloke who knows about that spot, there may well be another 10-50 people who know about it. its not a 'secret spot' if theres more people than you that know about it. even if its unbeknownst to urself. ive always followed the rule of first come, first served, but 79NM isnt exactly a short stroll...maybe you rolled up on his secret spot just a smidgen before he did?.
atleast he gave you 100m of courtesy room, and didnt anchor up within 20m of you (which is what frequently happens on the beaches [and in cockburn sound]).
no point getting the knickers in a knot until the government starts dividing up the ocean and selling it in lots. be prepared to pay for your premium grounds if you want to name it as your own, and be the only person 'permitted' to be/fish there. otherwise deal with it and share what everybody else is also entitled to use???

Secret spots
I agree With Turtl3tim's second paragraph, I had another fisherman pull along side me in the marina and ask me if I wanted a spare NS 10 display unit as he noticed that was what I had. Long story short he had sold his previous boat with the reciever and transducer attached then found he couldn't get replacements so the display unit was pretty useless to him. He told me that there were some good spots marked on it. When I had a look at his waypoints they were exactly the same as my secret spots, just goes to show that where ever you go someone else has probably been there as well.

Point has been lost
i think the point of the original post has been lost !
its not about secret spots or pinging it's merely if someone is fishing in a spot when you get there, move on and find somewhere else, it's a massive ocean with no need to fish so close
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Agree all the way Mooredog.
Agree all the way Mooredog. 79 miles from Dampier and sits next to you to fish? No discussion required, poor form by old mate and the more useless pricks that figure this out the better. 'No one owns the ocean' typical useless prick mentality. Find your own spots, especially up here and even more so that far out.
PS, you're not the Mooredog that used to dominate footy in Kalgoorlie about 10 years ago are you?

So let me get this
So let me get this straight...were all typical useless pricks for understanding that we do not AND cannot own the ocean?
More than one person would know about that spot. Its not like he spotted him on the horizon and thought oh yeah ill go fish next to him...he chugged out 79nm to find someone else there, he didnt park ontop of him, he parked down the reef.
Who knows...the next viable reef, bomby or drop off might have been another hour away?
Maybe its the arrogant pricks who think they have more of a god given right to be in a certain place, moreso than anyone else, who need to change there attitude?
People need to respect space and learn to share. Thats all im saying, if both parties play fair there shoudlnt be any issues. Eg. If someone rolls up on ur proclaimed "secret spot", dont piss and moan unless they tie off to the side of ur boat, or prevent u from fishing somehow

As long as the fish didn't go
As long as the fish didn't go off the bite when they arived! I couldn't care less... Would much rather put my emphasis into a conversation that was meaningful to a once in a lifetime trip (for me) than worrying about how close people get to my fishing spot... Monties!!! I'll get there one day!
Just come back from kalbarri and some guys stopped near our drift as we were catching snapper, we all went back with a feed...

This happened to me in Karratha some time back.
It suxs and my story in dampier is even worst. This CAT came up, looked at his sounder, exclaimed to me "Nice looking ground and lots of fish". 3 weeks later thought we would revisit the spot and there he was, clearly on the spot after clearly pinging us the weeks before.
*&^^%^$ was all I could say. I drove up and he told me in no uncertain terms to p*ss off from his spot!!!! Had another lump about 500m away. Went there and Oscar nomination time. Caught one shark that was brought up and down a few times to great fanfare with hollers and hoots. Sure enough he pulled anchor and was heading our way. Up anchor, raced over and reclaimed the spot. Deckie had a great time when they tried to return telling them to "p*ss off from our spot, waving the camera at them with pictures off the Ping and reminding them of the uncool behaviour.
Why is it when woman go on a tirade it is so much more effective than us blokes raging??
This one had me raging mad. The chap just come over, then said wow good spot, lots off fish, and took off. But had to gall to tell us to $^#$ off HIS spot when we cam back some time latter. We took photos off his boat whenhe came up, and it was this and the video that proved to him he pinged us. He took off obviously pissed that he had been sprung.
Apart from this spot fairly remote on West reef never had another true pinger. Had a few mates pop close to say hello but never stayed or fished near us, apart from one friend we invited to fish along.

Boat owner
As a boat owner, pingers suck.
Much more satisfying to row ones own boat, if I wanted to fish with heaps of other randoms and all the frustrations that go with it, I'd just stick to fishing land based from the North mole. Be a lot cheaper too. LOL
