Pe is a line diameter rating.
Pe is a line diameter rating. it usually does imply, ie. Pe2 - 20lb. However, most lines these days will have a Pe2 rating yet rated 35lb (eg. saltiga hyper braid)... so to answer your question... ~10kg

It's got to do
with braid line diameter not breaking strain -
PE 0.6 ………………………….. 0.128mm
PE 0.8 ………………………….. 0.148mm
PE 1 …………………………….. 0.165mm
PE 1.2 ………………………….. 0.185mm
PE 1.5 ………………………….. 0.205mm
PE 1.7 ………………………….. 0.218mm
PE 2 …………………………….. 0.235mm
PE 2.5 ………………………….. 0.260mm
PE 3 …………………………….. 0.285mm
PE 3.5 ………………………….. 0.310mm
PE 4 …………………………….. 0.330mm
PE 5 …………………………….. 0.370mm
PE 6 …………………………….. 0.405mm
PE 7 …………………………….. 0.435mm
PE 8 …………………………….. 0.470mm
PE 10 …………………………… 0.520mm
Then it's Aprox. x 10lbs. So pe1 @10lbs pe2 @20lb etc.

Always heard it was a jap
Always heard it was a jap silk thread gauge called gouw before it was applied to lines. Try searching that term for a bit more info probably.

PE 2 breaking strain can
PE 2 breaking strain can vary, wih MOST lines PE 2 (20lb) will break at 20lb -PE@ or more.. but the more you spend on a type of braid and the design in weave ... the more stronger the PE rating will be !!!

Yes I'm pretty sure Till is
Yes I'm pretty sure Till is correct, orginated from Japanese Silk Thread. It's not fair to assume these days that the PE rating x 10 is the breaking strain though, as technology has improved a lot of braids are far more than this, as is the case with the example John mentioned... sometimes almost double.

PE 2 = 33lb (15kg)
worst case scenario 10kg, but the more you spend the better the breaking strain could even be around 15kg :) as stated 2 comments above !!!

PE -Rod rating
With a big variation in PE rating versus breaking strain, why do the rod manufactures sell rods with a PE rating ? shouldnt it be an breakin strain ? I notice on the better quality rods they quote KG's at different angles.
I use a Hearty rise jig force PE 1.5-3 quite alot what max breaking strain should i put through that ? I run 30 lb on it (Fins) but wouldnt fancy putting YGK PE 3 through it at 47 lb, mind you i think 30lb fins breaks alot stronger than 30lb anyway.

Till, Link ????
Jamie you had a link to a web site over east some where that tested and compared loads of different braids, it was Quite interesting reading the results, do you still have the link ? I cant find it.
What i realised was that with all the tests there isn't alot of difference between true diameters vs true breaking strains.( not manufactures stated ones)

The other number you have to
The other number you have to keep in mind though is the one at the end, thats the measured area.
Fins Prt yellow. rated to 30lb, breaks @ 46lb, area: 0.399
Daiwa Saltiga Boat Braid PE3/40lb breaks at 45lb, area: 0.310
So the fins is tough and breaks over strain, but its 29% thicker* than the daiwa line, but the breaking strain is only 0.14lb higher, not 29% higher!
*unclear how that area is measured,

I think he measures first at
I think he measures first at its narrowest (flattest) point then the thickest point and does average.

Also alot of fins (dont now
Also alot of fins (dont now about the prt) have an insanely thick wax like coating on them which wears off which is also a pain in the arse so will eventually end up thinner. In saying that though, saltiga boat braid all the way!!!

Lines ain't Lines
Hi Guys
Trolling about I just came across this post.
Till,,, All the listed lines have been measured the same way, so you can compare between the brands and types.
The measurement method is explained some where, now in the forum part. Most of the time i cannot even get the stated measurement on the flat yet alone the width, although these measurements are not all that important on their own, but the sum of the two is.
I have spent a lot of time lately on testing used lines, and it seems that you do need to remove the worn faded end all the time, and if you are a heavy user end for end it and to discard it yearly. You need to see some of the photos of worn lines i have listed.
As a lot of the braiders use the same raw material, so the colourants, pics per inch, and condition of the equipment determines the strength, thats unless they go else where for their raw material.
I am seeing a general trend downward in thickness and breaking strain, so your lines are not going to be as strong in the future,,, Well thats what i am seeing at the moment.
The Gou is Pe and relates to thickness only, which is always wrong anyway.
Yours,,, Paulus
