What could it be

 Hey guys

SOn Monday we re fishing approx 10km mark off Ocean Reef. We departed the ramp at 5 am amongst that almost Bermuda triangle fog. Was pretty spun out when the fog lifted and there was boats only a couple of hundred meters from us that we did not know were there.

After a nice flathead from my 11 year old we hooked up on about 3 rays and shovel nose sharks, which gave the gear a good workout. We moved around a bit to try and find some ground as I am only just starting out. At one point all three of us fishing had our hooks cleaned off the leader, no big bites just pulled it up to find no hooks and some leader missing. Was using 60lb mono leader, and did not get snagged... Any ideas what it might of been.

Either way a little disappointed we only went hom with a flathead after ten hours on the water, bt still feeling those rays now. Caught an arrangement of reef fish, well my 11 year old did mostly including a juvenile dhu. Pity no sized ones. My brother inlaw had a small purple color cod type fish  on just outside of the marina on the reefs a few km out, but before he landed it something flashed silver and grabbed it took the line for a huge run and he struggled for about five minutes before it spat the original catch out with no marks fully intact.notsure what that could have been either other than shark maybe.

A boat close to us got a good run off something soon after that made him run right around the boat. Splashed around a bit. They got it to the side of the boat and then struggled to get it off the hook, so assuming that must of been a shark as they didn't seem to keen to get it in the boat even after such a fight.

Sorry turned out to be a question into a report, sorry for the long winded query...

Any sharp toothed critter

Any sharp toothed critter like a mackerel or shark could do that but my money is on a toad fish. Those buggers can snip you off without you feeling a thing.

Sounds like it was a norwester then makes sense, didn't even think of them.

Dizzy... I did think of the diver option at the time, no one anywhere close at the time to I dismissed that idea, this was later in the day after the fog had lifted.

One was like ok that's weird, second line was again and no bite? And the third was on with the wire trace and try and catch it. No joy and glad that was the case if it was norwester.

Anyway thanks and out till next trip, try for some better catch next time. Might have to go a little wider but have caught some decent dhuie in that close with another fw member so thought I'd search for some closer ground. The old 150 two stroke is a little thirsty and has limited fuel carrying capacity so was trying to find close ground to bring the cost down. Particularly when I normally go with the kids so no deckies to hit up for half the bill.

We had caught a little leathery a little bit earlier. Ahhh the plot thickens again....

Either way it was slightly annoying.

HeaPs of norwest Blowies about. They were big at Rotto, biting whiting in half before the leaders starting coming up without hooks.
