Wellington Dam?

Anyone been down to Wellington Dam for a fish latley? Whats normally on the chew there?

Longweekend down there and want to dust off my trout rods for the weekend - just wondering if there are any trout in there still?

Mate said to check the water level, as it was empty last time he was there..

Any good areas to fish there?

Is it Boatable?

Redfin made it into the dam?

Lots of questions I know, but what can I say, better prepared than sitting there wasting beer time on the side of a dam..

Thanks guys...

Not first hand info, but from what I have heard.

Yes there are many redfin in dam.

Trout are stocked into collie river, below the dam.

Boats are allowed in certain areas with electric motors only i believe, but couldnt  find out the reg's when I was looking it up.

Not 100% sure but from the

Not 100% sure but from the report in the Sunday Times just before the Trout season opened, where it had the numbers of trout released and where, it didnt show any stocking of the Collie or Wellington Dam this year.

That said there will always be a few wild ones around in the river below the dam wall to Honeymoon Pool. If you got a 4x4 there is a track that follows the river on the south side from Honeymoon Pool that can get you access to more rapids, but if you go all the way it ends in a big steep climb up Mt Lennard. Can leave you a bit white Knuckled if your car starts sliding back while trying to get up it :O

Also good Redfin to be had in the Dam itself(put in there around 1904 i think?). Earth Worms are a good bait for them. I find it easier to get them closer to Collie town itself where the dam narrows than near the dam wall where it is quite vast.

Someone please correct me if

Someone please correct me if i have missed one, but in the Sunday Times i think it said Harvey Dam got the most by far, something like 2000 Rainbows and 400 Browns???? Said also Waroona, Drakesbrook Dam, Logue Brook Dam got heaps of Rainbows and a few Browns, though not as many as Harvey.

And for the rivers i think it said most the stocking went into the Warren and Blackwood. Didnt see any mention of them stocking the Donnelly River, or Collie River/Wellington Dam, but that was only the Sunday Times report.

The Murray hasnt been stocked for along time and there appears to be no plans to restart stocking it due to declining water levels.

DoF used to put up a PDF file every year before the season opened showing where they stocked and how many. They havent put one up this year, i dont know why. Maybe try contact Fisheries and see if they would be so kind as to email you the details or something?

Trout Stocking information

Wed, 2012-09-26 09:00

The best info I could find:

Stocking information
  • Almost 500,000 rainbow* trout fry were stocked in south-west waters in spring 2011.
  • 2700 ex-broodstrock rainbow* trout from the hatchery were released in spring 2012: 2200 to Harvey Dam, 300 to Logue Brook Dam and 200 to Big Brook Dam
  • About 22,000 yearling rainbow trout have been or will be released around the south-west in 2012. Harvey Dam and the Warren, Blackwood and Donnelly rivers received most. Collie Gorge and Drakesbrook Dam received 1000 each. Big Brook Dam, Glen Mervyn Dam, Logue Brook Dam, Lefroy Brook and Waroona Dam received 500 each.

The ex-broodstock released in spring 2012 are big trout and will be at minimum legal size of 300 mm to keep if caught at the start of the season. The trout fry released in spring 2011 are also likely to be at minimum legal size to keep.

The yearling trout will not reach minimum legal size to keep until early or late summer, depending on their environment.

* Note: Much smaller numbers of brown trout are also released. More than 10,000 brown trout fry were stocked in south-west waters in spring 2011. About 200 brown trout broodstock have also been released into Harvey Dam.

Thanks mate, not as accurate

Thanks mate, not as accurate as the old info they used to release but still useful.

Wonder why they havent stocked any fry this year, they are selling some through the fisheries website ATM so obviously there are more to spread around.

I stoped and threw a few lures arround in the blackwood between nanup and balingup for two hours and nailed two rainbows about 35cm each (both released) last weekend.
