We want to build a reef Tripod

Sherbs and I are looking at getting some Tripods built for fishing on some of the reefs around Perth. Does anyone have a design sheet for one of these or know where we can find one? Many thanks, Colin Hay

I dont have a design however

It wouldnt be that difficult to design one yourself. I would imagine some thick walled alloy tube with maybe some checker plate for a seat would do the trick and would be light enough to carry.

Yes, that is something like what we are looking at, with collapsible, or sliding legs, and with hooks for hanging bags and buckets on, etc.

You could have the legs set up adjustable

Sun, 2010-01-17 16:05

like a painting pole for uneven ground. With something like that you could pretty much hold everything together with pins and xtra big split rings

tripods

I dont have a design either but, I've got a DVD with Rex Hunt fishing off a tripod at Trigg beach. From what I saw there I think the main things you would want light and strong. Obviously carting it with all your gear down the beach wont be easy but you could make it easier with it being lightweight and maybe having an over the shoulder carry strap.

But the other things that you would want are a few hooks or baskets to hang your stuff off and some good rungs on the legs so getting up and down are easier.

Sounds like a great idea. Good luck with it and I cant wait to see the results.

hey Colin,it helps to grow longer legs, years ago I used to go down in winter to the trigg blue hole stand next to the tripod guys and catch really big tailor on lures,I remember once I stood back when a swell came in and disappeared down a hole for a few seconds

have gone for a tumble once as well. But we just thought we would try the tripods out. There are times when those tripod guys are getting out to spots nobody else can fish and catching some great tailor.

I'll see if i can dig a photo up

Sun, 2010-01-17 20:09

Me and my brother used to tripod fish at the blue hole at trigg about 15 years ago.

I'll see if i can dig a photo up or i'll draw up a pic of what mine was like.

I originally got mine of cleggy, it had one of those old metal tractor seats, the ones that fit the shape of your arse.

It didnt have telescopic legs. They just fold from 3 hinges under the seat so it was easy to carry. half way down the legs were spreader bars. On the end of each leg was a metal prong about 3/8 inch thick so they could dig into the reef and provide support.

You'll need to weld a rod holder within reach of the seat and a hook for your bag for the catch.

I guess it would have been at least 7 ft long. We used the spreader bars as the step up into the seat.

cheers

Mon, 2010-01-18 21:06

Would you believe we just sold my last tripod a few weeks ago... it had been collecting dust for a while in the shed and a pommy guy came in (Scarborough store), real keen on getting one... we figured this wasn't getting used, might as well get sold, and he was thrilled to get it. Was going to be perching on it up Lano way to further his career as a windsurfer potographer. Fair call.

I don't know why tripod fishing died out. It's still the best way to go reef fishing.

i think they died out

Mon, 2010-01-18 21:12

i think they died out because of people like Colin and Steve standing out there in waist deep freezing cold water to catch a feed and think if theese two old farts can do it we can.Laughing    used to see them up and doewn the coast years back but those days have gone, people are keen to get fish but maybe not that keen to sit on top of a pole for hours

Tripod Pic

Mon, 2010-01-18 21:25

Here is a pic of an original Trigg Blue Hole tripod that belonged to Ron Johnstone. 30 plus years old and made from approx 40mm gal pipe, has the 2 smaller centre brace poles that swing out and lock together to make a very sturdy platform, its quite heavy which would assist (together with the spiked legs) to hold its position on the reef even when not being used. Simple climbing arrangement on one side with a rod holder built in to one of the legs. When seated the fisherman would be 2.5 metres above the reef platform with his feet in the 2 foot rests.

Happy to assist any f/w members with more info or if you want to check it out.
