I used to do alot of redfin

Sun, 2009-09-13 20:25

I used to do alot of redfin fishing out in the murray and live minnow was the go, followed by spinners with yellow or red on them. Just hooked the minnows through the lip and stuck them under a float.

Live Minnows!

Sun, 2009-09-13 20:29

Grab yourself a skinny piece of bamoboo as a rod. Tie some very fine line to it and a very small chemically sharpened hook. Dig fresh worms under a fallen tree and place tiny bits on the hook. Dangle in the creeks feeding the dams and you will have a ball catching your live bait.

Next; rig up with a small running ball sinker and a decent sized chemically sharpened hook. Single hook through the shoulder of a live minnow and gently toss near a log or structure in the dam.The rig is similar to what you would use for Mulloway except very much smaller.

The Redfin will strike and run for the snags. Man! This is heaps of fun for a day out with the boys.

But dams are lure only.

And if they are in the area, they will take anything and everything so IMO lure choice is not an issue.

Can you catch these fish

Tue, 2009-09-15 09:34

Can you catch these fish land based, or are you wasting your time?

I searched old posts, but they all spoke about boating.

Any info on land based redfin fishing would be very helpful:

locations?

do you need a license?

any good accommodation close to redfin spots?

Cheers.

You need a freshwater

Tue, 2009-09-15 10:42

You need a freshwater fishing license to fish for Redfin.

I have been working down in Collie since April and have fished for Redfin from shore at Wellington Dam, Glen Mervyn Dam as well as the Collie River, caught all of them on bream gear, they will take anything from Zipbaits, R2S Babyvibes, Ecogear VX and SX lures, Jackall Chubbies and all manner of soft plastics. Found the most productive times were early morning and late afternoon but you will catch them all day in deeper water.

There is plenty of accommodation in the towns around most of the dams just google the area you want to fish.

Spinners work well!

Fri, 2009-09-18 11:51

Just been down south and caught some Redfin on spinners.

They had an orange body with black spots, accompanied with a silver spoon implement.

Don't know the name of the spinner, but they worked very well, actually caught first redfin in less than a dozen cast.

redfin can grow to 10kg but common around 1-3 kilos in the south west but most are around 1kilo mark depending on where you fish. In river and esturiene fishing forums you will find pictures of them from the warren river down south...

Celtas in the trout pattern

Wed, 2010-01-06 22:01

Celtas in the trout pattern work very well. Otherwise cheapo spinners with red in them are good too.

Will be hopefully reporting about freshwater fishing alot now being only a 30second drive to Harvey Dam.

..... i wish i lived that

..... i wish i lived that close to harvey dam! the reddies are going off there at the moment and apparently trolling or fishing from the wall is producing some decent brown trout aswell as redfin.

ive spent a fair few hours

Sun, 2010-01-17 18:55

ive spent a fair few hours on the dams and rivers and one of the most productive and cheaper lures is the smiling jacks. Buy them from Kmart when theres a sale on tackle and theyre cheap as. Green and yellow ones work best. Nothing like a feed of fresh reddies!!

How do you cook them?

Mon, 2010-01-18 19:23

hey lurcha just wondering how you cook your reddies like weather you skin and fillet them or cook them whole or whatever because one thing ive noted about this species of fish is that whatever you do its almost impossible to scale them!

fillet them for sure, they

Tue, 2010-01-19 05:26

fillet them for sure, they are one of the toughest skinned/scaled fish around. Guess thats part of the reason they are pests. My fave way of cooking them is covering with mccormicks southern fried chicken mix! tastes great.
