Water in Fuel Filter/Tank
Submitted by ledge64 on Tue, 2017-08-22 19:11
Motor ran rough on the weekend and found the fuel fitler full of water, have cleaned all the lines filters etc and replaced the main fuel filter, looking for recommended silver bullet/tablet to get rid of any water in the tank, have 2 x 100 litre tanks almost full and any advice would be appreciated as trying to avoid draining the tanks.
Cheers

best plan is to put a water
best plan is to put a water separating filter with a drain on the bottom. Run the motor on the muffs and see if it draws any water. If so open the drain as it starts to fill with water until it stops... Most water will now be gone from the tank... You can then add methylated spirits to absorb the small amount left

Kero?
Kero?
Thats an odd one Ive never heard before and Im curious what it would do?
I cant see that it would do anything, meths or any ethanol/methanol type product works because it is both water and fuel soluble absorbing a small amount of water into the fuel and burning.
But kero is not water soluble?

First, find where the water
First, find where the water is coming from-taste it to see if its salt or fresh

Metho will mix with water
This is an old dodge for the tropics where condensation in fuel tanks can be a real problem. But you are certainly better to drain. Worst part of underfloor tanks is trying to clean them out, but there is usually a way. If you have floor-mounted fillers, a pump (suitably rated for inflammable fuel) can be used to "vacuum" them out. But I found the easiest way is to inject a very small amount of air pressure. If you have multiple breathers, you will just have to block off all but one, then introduce the air pressure through that. Have your fuel line disconnected from the motor, and running into containers. You will obviously need enough containers to take all the fuel you have in there. The air pressure will start the fuel running, keep JUST ENOUGH pressure there to make it run. Don't get all enthusiastic, or impatient, and try to speed the process up too much, or you will run the risk of damaging your tanks , or inflating your gunwhale-mounted filler hose, if you have one. I have done this many times, as long as you can get to your breathers, and have enough containers, it's very easy.

If your determined to drain
If your determined to drain the tanks and have an out board . Buy a male fuel fitting to suit your fuel line and a meter or 2 of fuel hose ,hang it lower than your tank into drums and pump the primer bulb a bit till it starts to syphon then go have a beer and wait ..if it an in board just get a bit of fuel line and instal it before motor (most have a ryco fuel filter somewhere) push the extended fuel liine out thru the bung hole and into a drum . Get more beer and wait (loosen fuel caps to draw air in)
