Submitted by meersy on Mon, 2015-02-09 20:27
Did U know that photos can be traced back showing the exact position that photo has been taken when taken on the iphone. Keep this in mind people!!!!!!! Make sure that your location services are turned of when posting pics from your iphone.

Geo tracking
Im guessing this is the reason you took the Dhu photo down before? Solid dhu as well.
There is a guy that calls himself the "NZ jihadist" who fights over in Syria with ISIS and got caught out with this big time. He was posting comments on social media and the idiot was broadcating his location worldwide because he had geo tracking enabled on his phone... his location at the time of each media post was then able to be linked with major ISIS events. Di#khead!

This is why the forum has young blokes on it
This situation was covered a few years ago. Nice reminder just the same.
I would guess a spot or two has been broadcast over the years. Still have to get off couch, find the spot and fish it properly.

Brick phone?
haha I use a 6210 nokia , prob around the mid 90,s Id say , it texts AND you can phone people!
but thanks for the heads up!
Besides you got the big one from that spot so its in no-ones interests to hit it again anytime soon.
As a side note , do people realize that most good spots in metro are actually in more than one persons gps, just a reality check!

I remember when it was uncovered on this site
...but can't find the thread.
Remember, it was that peanut posting photos of Spanglies and other northern fish that he claimed were caught at Cervantes off the beach.
Then someone extracted the GPS location off the photos and blew his cover....he was fishing in Coral Bay. Took him a while to fess up.
It was pretty funny, and I would like to read the thread again if someone could find it

I came across a photo the other day when searching for exmouth spanglies and there was a comment by Adam saying something along the lines of "last warning for this cervantes/coral bay crap". Now the comment makes alot more sense (was before my time on Fishwrecked)!

What if the pic was taken in
What if the pic was taken in an area with no phone coverage? Don't iPhones just use cell towers to work out GPS co-ordinates?

no they dont, GPS is a specific system of satelites not a generic term.
They do work quicker when in phone cover but its not required.

Hey Woody,
No as far as I know phones also have GPS units in them, but they are 'assisted' GPS, which means they work much better with phone towers around. Without phone towers it can still get a fix, but can take up to 20 minutes in bad conditions.
Unrelated topic - there's a product called a Bad Elf that you can plug in to ipad/iphone etc to make it much better as a GPS when there are no phone towers around. Looking at one at the moment to use on remote trips where the boats don't always have GPS onboard so I can use the ipad out there.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

My understanding is the
My understanding is the iPhone will not record location when you are outside data network coverage. Next time you take a photo when you review it it will give you a location, try it 30kms out and it won't give you the location. You are able to change the location to a grid reference.
i tried this before and was unable to locate the gr when I was out on a deep drop but was able to from photos taken in areas with data coverage.

You should be able to turn
You should be able to turn off GPS coords in images? Its not in settings?
Once its turned off it wont be a parameter in EXIF data

Just turn it off, I have a Samsung and when I have the GPS running, my battery doesn't last very long where my battery is good for 3 or 4 days with it off.

We'll have another lull of
We'll have another lull of reports with photos for a month or so now I bet ya, I seem to recall it happening last time the issue was brought up. As mentioned above, turn geo/location tag off in your camera settings and nobody will be able to see a thing.
I'm intersted to know if someone from the forum notified meersy that his pic had tags on? Someones obviously checking, but kind enough to let the poster know? Bit confused

You can manually geotag any
You can manually geotag any photo with an app called "geotagmypic" simply open your photo through the app & drag the curser anywhere around the world. It then does a copy of the photo with the new geotag location. So anyone searching trying to get gps spots through photos would be fishing a spot thinking that's where you caught ur fish... Just a thought but one way of getting back at the sneaky pricks

Because it would ruin my day getting stressed about it and I am out there to relax. how do I know he hasn't fished it before? If he catches a fish before me then he is probably doing something different and better than me. good luck to that person.

IMO nine times out of ten if
IMO nine times out of ten if you have caught a good fish, by the time you get it up and organize a photo shoot, you would have drifted a couple hundred meters off the spot anyway, a couple hundred meters squared of ocean is huge and basically would be near on impossible to find, and very rarely if you catch fish at a spot, the next time you go there you catch fish anyway, so good luck to them.
