Underwater art

Love this idea, would be wicked to have it off of Rottnest, within snorkelling range of the Island but deep enough to dive around... if that's possible.

Don't know how you'd keep it clean or at least clear enough to be able to work out what the sculptures are though.

I can imagine all sorts of photos being taken with the second photo......
All looks pretty cool but I'm sure there's a few greenies out there who would consider it littering.

Isnt there a snorkel trail

Thu, 2010-10-21 13:55

Isnt there a snorkel trail in one of the rotto bays in the south? I think it has underwater plates/blocks marking the route and with writing on them? Could work quite well there.

As for the greenies, if the surface was right, it could be colonised by various reef organisms. Would be pretty cool having them slowly get covered by reef (though, covered by seaweed is a little boring).

Theres a few examples of people suspending concrete/aragocrete in the ocean and letting it get colonised. One aquarium left a bunch of rocks suspended in the ocean and took them out a few years later so they could put them in their aquarium without taking natural coral. Theres also a place in the US that farms live rock for saltwater aquariums. Then there are also a few bridges that got colonised with marine life that actually impressed the greenies :p.

biorock - Bali

On a slightly different note with rocks and corals...

Up in Pemuteran (North West of Bali), they are giving nature a helping hand by recreating the coral in the area after many years of pollution and adverse fishing practices... (using bombs and cyanide)

I snorkelled around the area about 8 years ago and then again earlier this year..

What a huge difference !!
