Tuna off Ocean Reef
Submitted by Pob on Mon, 2019-02-11 18:36
Took the tinny out of Ocean Reef yesterday, found a few schools of tuna, nothing we threw at them worked, throwing the smallest metals we had to try and match what they were eating but not a touch, tried staying well off them. Even trolled some small skirts around them. Any hints or tips, or did someone get one, interested to know what type of tuna they were
Cheers, Paul

have been getting a couple of the little southern bluefin lately. also picked up a few bonito, so may have been one of these? the ones i have caught have been trolling, and the good old halco laser pro does the damage. any time i have cast at them, have had a few folows on a small metal twisty with a slightly greenish brown reflection, but no joy...they seem to be pretty fussy sometimes.

Definitely too big for bonito, looked to be about 18 inches to 24 inches long, frustrating little buggers aren’t they!

Awesome, cheers, never
Awesome, cheers, never targeted tuna so didn’t know if we were missing something, they were right next to the boat at times but moving so quick couldn’t really get a decent ID. Should’ve just carried on trolling for Macs but thought we’d give them a crack!

if you go too close to the
if you go too close to the school they usually go deep. the ones we got we were about 30 to 40 mtrs to the side of where the birds were working or around the front of the school with the lures a fair way back out of the boat wash.
others will cast to them but from a reasonable distance

Tried to get within casting distance but not too close, every now and then they’d run straight past us

Seems to be that they are
Seems to be that they are quite fussy this year,I try cast at each school some are all over the lures of any type or size soon as they hit the water. Other schools you can get a perfect casts in for not even a follower. A lot of the schools are feeding off small bits of bait near the weed. They only feed for a short while and move on. If you shadow them for a while till they feed a bit stronger on a good amount of bait your more likely to get a bite. Our best days this year have been when they have whitebait balled up.
The last few weeks schools out from Lano, have been mixed SBF and striped.
