Trolling for weed.

Hi guys Iv just joined up and in need of a little info.

So we have just started trolling recently, mainly for Macks but anything is a bonus however we are constantly pulling the lures in to clear weed off them to the point we just give up and go home. Is there anything you can do to avoid this ? Is it due to the Easterly wind ? Will it go away ?

Iv done a heap of research over the last few weeks looking at old posts and reading everything and anything to do with macks. We bought a heap of Halco pro lasers and wev been sticking to about 5-7 knots. Wer yet to venture out to Rotto as we dont have an EPRIB but we caught a Mack awhile ago on a bait pretty close to home so wev been cruising all over the place. I think we are on the right track and are bound to have some luck eventually but is there anything we are doing wrong ?

Cheers and looking forward to getting involved here on the forums.

P.S heres some success photos for your viewing pleasure from NZ and AUS.

T.K.

some nice fish there. do yourself a favor and get youself an epirb. you could also try trolling skirts as they dont pick the weed up as much but the down side is the macks destroy the skirts when they hit

Welcome to the madness of trolling

Thu, 2013-02-14 21:10

Yep ,ya just troll along , not a care in the world and wait for the fish to come to you,

Thats what they tell ya.

yeah right, trolling off Perth can be productive on the right day, area ,moon phase, time of year

etc etc , but like all fishn it takes time on the water , effort and a fair bit of patience to crack.

As you have found weed can be annoying, so this helps us, alot of the weed will sit along a contour line

so if you are trolling along in 15 metres of the back of the reef and hitting weed, try going out to 18-20, and sometimes its better.

We use braid for trolling , with a long shock leader as it transmits the vibration of the lure better to the rod tip

thus letting you know you have weed.

Get some x raps, they are a great lure and sit lower in the water  than the halcos so this sometimes helps too.

As mentioned skirted lures hook less weed , but imo hook less fish too in the metro.

Rigged gardies with plastic squid on the nose however hook plently and dont hook much weed.

Good luck , you may need it , as we metro fishers have been spoilt in the last few years,so

this year may be the reality check year, but I wish you all the best and keep trying.

great pics mate!

we caught a few last year but have yet to open the account this year - like has been said follow the current lines between 18-25m, that has worked for us.

Try a spread of different sized lures e.g. 160's, 190's, Xraps, anything with gold in it seems to work well too.

We've also converted to single strand wire as its thinner and harder to see... plus a witchdoctor and daisy chain! Seems a bit excessive but it all helps.

Weed

If weeds a massive problem you can always change the lure trebles out for singles, tend to catch a lot less weed with singles. Some argue less hook ups on hits but when you do hook up theres also less chance of the fish throwing the hook.
