trolling speeds? What works?

My wife accuses me of trolling too slowly, and I think she is right.  What speed do you troll at for spanish mackeral and tuna (talking shark bay here)?  i have never gone much quicker than 5 knots, but i am thinking probably 8 - 12 knots might be better?  thinking i will have four rigs, a deep diver (7m), mid water (2.5m), metal slice, and popper out the back at the time.

Thoughts?

Trolling speeds

Mon, 2012-01-09 20:51

Randell,I would say it is difficult to allocate a correct speed due to the variety of lures you plan to run in your spread, but if you were to troll around the7-8 knott mark you should be ok just look back at the spread from time to time to make sure they are all swimming correctly. You may be better of say running 2shallow divers and 2 deep divers to get more consistancy out of the lures.I normally runn this setup for mackies with decent success.IWill also like to say to vary your speed from time to time until you find where your having the most success, try speeds between say 5 knots and up to 9 as long as your lures continue to swim correctly, hope this helps

caught plenty of macks at 5-8 knots. They are not fussy. I only run bibbed lures that are chrome colour underneath.

Never used a teaser but have just invested in one so will give a go on the weekend.

i believe the trick to running lures correctly is not to have too much line out.  if the surface area of the line exceeds the surface area of the bib on the lure the bib ceases to work.  I read or watched a program where they said they run their deep divers as close as five metres from the boat to make sure they were still 'swimming' properly.

Xraps

Mon, 2012-01-09 21:04

I love my xraps I just wish they made one in pink chrome,I find they swim great at most speeds and it doesn't seem to matter to much as to where they are positioned.five meters behind the boat seems a little close to Me I quite often run one of my lures quite close trailing the witch doctor but this is probably 10 meters behind the boat

trolling 6-8 for mack, about 8 for wahoo

and 11 knots for tuna etc

Thats what we did at turtle bay for a couple of years - seemed to work!

First time up there we tried to catch a tuna, and we couldn't, even though they were jumping around us!! Picked up the speed and couldn't go 10 metres without catching one!

Yep same. Wire trace with clip.

After a close call when trying to unhook a big Mackie I now gaff them, side it through the transom door and cut the line at the trace.  Once beld and dead then remove the lure. Takes 5 second to tie on a new lure but hours to remove a treble.

You will notice that I have my boarding ladder on the opposite side to the door to make getting big fish on board easy.

In the past I have seen the old club used straight across the top of the head as soon as the fish has landed?  then remove the lure and bleed.  thoughts?  is there a more 'humane' way, or a better way so the fillets taste better?

Yep a good crack or two on top of the head and then its safe to get your lure out. Pretty quick end for the fish too id guess. Also make sure you use single strand wire, ~70lb, just haywire twist each end.

Halco lure

bibless.I use the old chrome blue ones.I only have about 4 left now.One of them out deep and a chrome bidded rapala in the prop wash are the two lures that dont change in my spread.Dont pick up many on the rapa in the wash but it seems to bring them in IMO.The best slow troll lure ever made was the old 30 cm nilssy. The only lure i could swim in a spread of baits and get good strick rates.

Speed depends on a lot of things sea conditions etc

If using any on the shallow divers or deep divers make you are seeing the tip vibrate which is a pretty good sign that they are working,

For pushers so long as they are splashing and look right

You will catch them if they are around

Spread

What I've found with trolling a combination of surface and divers is that only one or the other will work. Surface lures need a bit more speed to get the action the head is designed for (cup face, jet head, whatever) while divers need a bit of a slower speed to get the action right for them. Having said that I have regularly run them together with the divers on the short corners no more than 15m behind the boat and two surface lures out the back. The trick in this instance is to go as fast as the divers will allow you, ie they stay down and don't start spearing off to the side. Doing this gives the surfaces lures half a chance of working properly. In this case if you do hook up on the surface lures out the back accelerate on hook-up for about 15-20 seconds to drive the hooks in hard. This also puts the fish a little further out the back and gives you a chance at clearing the divers once you slow back down to retrieve the fish. Never completely stop the boat though. Works for me.

If your not to sure on the speed aspect, tack from diagonally rather than in a straight line. If you have a good spread of lures, some will take off on the turns and vice versa and don`t stop straight away when you get a hit, better chance of a double hook up.
