Transport Minister inspects latest works on Indian Ocean Drive
Transport Minister Simon O’Brien has inspected works on the new Lancelin to Cervantes road, due for completion later this year.
The $112million second stage of the project, which commenced in 2008, involves the construction of 65km of new sealed coast road, starting just south of Lancelin and extending north to Pinnacles Drive, 10km south of Cervantes.
Visiting the site today, Mr O’Brien said he was confident the road would be a hit with locals and tourists alike.
“When this road is completed it will be possible to travel from Perth to Geraldton entirely along a coastal route. This is bound to have significant economic benefits for local communities along the way,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said the construction of the new road would also ease pressure on the Brand Highway, currently the most direct route to Geraldton and beyond.
“At present the Brand Highway is a heavily-used freight route. However, when Indian Ocean Drive is completed, day trippers, travellers and other passenger vehicles heading into the areas near Lancelin and Cervantes will have another route to choose,” he said.
Heavy freight vehicles will be restricted from travelling on the Lancelin to Cervantes road.
The Minister said given the alignment was being mainly built through bushland, environmental concerns were a priority for the construction team.
“What we have seen is a number of enhanced construction techniques aimed at reducing any damage to the natural environment,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said works were being directly managed by Main Roads.
“There is currently a workforce of 135, including 24 Main Roads employees and 111 hired plant operators and labourers. The project has a strong safety focus and involves ongoing employee and industry training,” he said.
“The State Government is committed to delivering infrastructure projects to facilitate future economic growth and improve road safety.”

While I have thought about
While I have thought about various ways to sabotage this project...unfortunately it is only going to delay the inevitable.
I'm really worried about what may happen to that special stretch of coast between Lancelin and Hangover Bay as a result of this work - along with so many other people who feel the same way.
I do the trip to Cervantes on a regular basis up the Brand and find it to be a most enjoyable drive. It's also a relatively safe stretch with plenty of dual carriageway and safe overtaking spots....so I don't buy any of rubbish about it being safer.
This road is purely about tourism in my view and will eventually result in communities such as Wedge and Grey being destroyed one way or the other.
Not to mention the pressure that the additional traffic will put on the already fragile marine environment in that stretch.

Jurien has a major development going on. Has anyone seen the plans for Jurien?
Jurien will be no different to Busselton, modern suburbia, except the developers are promoting the no-take zone at your front door. The funny thing about no-take zones is there is usually a commercial operation associated with them.
The hype about this road through to Jurien has been going for more than 20 years..
It is kind of sad that some towns will lose and are losing their nostalgic Aussie fishing town character. The laid back and carefree surroundings.

Yes fellas agree
my concern with this new road is heavy trucks, but I see the Minister has stated there will be a restriction, but what tonnage is he talking about. As the Cervantes turnoff from the Brand, we've encounted quite a few trucks, (not cray trucks)
Love to live in Jurien but like Leeman and Green Head way to expensive for our pockets.
