Towing Vehicle

Hey guys,

have a 6.1 alli boat 2 ish tonnes. the one to the left and take it north when I can couple times per year.

Looking for a second hand towing vehicle. have another car for everyday use so really one just for towing. used for horse floats pretty often as well.

am only looking at post 2004ish so please Im not after a GQ

have been looking at the 2004 ish HZJ 105 landcruisers. the 4.2 diesel model (non turbo) best fits my price range. (don't want to go back as far as the 80 series...just too old)

My question is really does this have enough guts. .....at 96KW does the torque the 4.2 diesel have make up for the poor power. I realise these cars are built to last and the lack of a turbo helps with longevity.

was also looking at the 2.5l turbo diesel Navara. (lots of you guys must drive these)
have read the threads of D22 vs D40 and the X mining vehicles threads etc. can get something like a 2008 with pretty low kms in my price range as well and these have 125KW power. quite a bit up from the LC

So anyone have experience towing with a 4.2l diesel non turbo LC or a 2.5l ST x ???

cheers

Tow

I have to agree with boomer a bit there any naturally aspirated 4.2d will struggle towing that boat, they don't like headwinds either.  Purely for towing a petrol might be a better option, power is number one and if its only occasional is fuel economy an issue?

fuel economy

Sat, 2013-07-27 09:55

not a huge consideration, but yeah somewhat.

have looked at the 4.7 v8 LC ....hard to get with low km in my price range and insanely thirsty but Im not doing a lot a kms / year so still and option.

Edit: now it's on the left

Yep the 4.7 V8 cruiser is thirsty. I used to get around 35-40lts/100kms towing a 2.5 ton boat to Exmouth. Heaps of grunt though.

Recently used a mates D40 Narvara to tow the same boat to Exmouth and was really impressed.

Also had a 100 series non turbo 4.2 and it was crap compared to the Navara or V8 cruiser.

Cant agree with you there

Sat, 2013-07-27 09:57

Cant agree with you there Boomer,i tow my 6 mtr Haines thats about 2 tonnes with my 05 series HZJ.If you arent in a big hurry and take it easy they arent to bad on the fuel. They go slow up hills but on the open road where you are only meant to be doing 100km they are fine.I had the same dilemma and wanted the turbo 4.2 but at an extra 10 grand and service every 5000k decided that getting there a half hour later wasnt a big deal.Last trip i did to Jurien Bay from Bunno i did on 1 tank and that included a bit of 4x4 as well.Only mod i have done is a lift kit and a bigger exhaust. She runs fine,if its only for towing and is going to sit in the driveway i wouldnt be blowing the extra on a turbo, but if you have plenty of cash then why not.

patrol

Sat, 2013-07-27 09:59

I would get a post 2004 patrol in the 3lt diesel. Yes everyone will throw out the hand grenade rubbish but since the 2002 update on these engines I cant find a genuine online incident whereby one actually blew up. As long as you clean the Airflow sensor with contact cleaner occasionally these things are a great tow car and general 4wd. I had a 2003 for 5 years and it towed my 2T ali really well. NOt the fastest but more than enough power and pretty reasonable on fuel. Now have a 200 series and it uses 4-6l more per 100 towing and probably 1-3L more not towing than the patrol. Granted  I push it a lot harder cause it can:)

Sat, 2013-07-27 12:27

27litres/100 km towing 2.7 t boat to Exmouth with a v8 cruiser , same from Busso to Augusta/Hamelin a few times. Boat sit low on the trailer, only the top of the console and t/top above the vehicle. Wind resistance makes a huge difference when its a cat or a cabin boat behind the car compared to a nice sexy centre console.

Tow vehicle

Sat, 2013-07-27 12:33

I have a 2007 3L TD Holden Rodeo (the common rail version)and towed a fully packed car and boat (5.6 Barcrusher)plus 3 people to Exmouth in April and was very happy with the fuel return. Sitting at about 90Km/Hr it returned 14-14.5 L/100Km. City it gives about 9. I believe it has a tow capacity of 3T. I looked at the Navara D22 as well in the 3L and new 2.5L (common rail). Very squashy inside the cab though, hence going for the Rodeo.

Not impressed

Sat, 2013-07-27 15:17

I had a 2011 model auto D40, it towed a 23ft glass boat no worries but was extremely thirsty and bloody uncomfortable after a couple of hours in the seat.It was the 2.5 model and was brought purely for towing boats, vans and whatever else.it would use a full tank just getting to Jurien from Port Kennedy. The mrs hated driving it and I must admit the turning circle was shit and it had 9500klms on the clock when I arseholed it in favour of a new grand Cherokee. In short I would not recommend a Navara but it depends on your budget and each to their own I suppose.

 I have a 2002 standard

Sat, 2013-07-27 15:37

I have a 2002 standard diesel landcruiser, I towed a 1.5t rig with it, and all it did was blew smoke(even with new injectors) and was gutless. I definately would not buy a non turbo diesel to tow with. Seeing as I got it reasonably cheap, I dropped a turbo on it. Now has 111kw at back wheels, and tows well. I towed a 3t rig for a while with it, pretty good power for that size, and used about 22lt/100ks up to Coral Bay. Only thing to be weary of is they have a weaker gearbox in them than the factory turbo version, but prob be alright with 2t rig. Not everyones cup of tea, bolting a turbo on, bout $4500, but has worked pretty good on mine.

at the point peron ramp some one has stuck up a sign to sell a cruiser that has had a conversion done to it and has a massive diesel 6lt+ in it (I think Brunswick engineering do the conversion) any way it looks in good nick and he only wants 14k if you pm me I will slip down and get the number of the sign it could be what you need

I cannot remember, but the D22 (2.5L) and D40 are the same engine - one is tuned more. Cannot remember which one it is.

 I also have a 6 metre plate alloy with cuddy cabin, get around 18 L / 100 Kim's when towing up North at 90 - 100 kmhr

Need to use low range when pulling boat out of ramp and then no problem with clutch life.

100 series v8 on gas

Mon, 2013-07-29 06:41

Hi mate, I have had a few landcruisers now for towing the boat 3.5 ton and agree with all the statements above about non turbo diesels true if you go slow they are manageable however throw in hills eg northhampton and a headwind and you have no choice but to put your foot into it. The best of the lot was a 100 series v8 on gas. got my first one with 190k on the clock fitted a gas system to it and it was a dream. We had a couple in the family before we had to upgrade the vehicles. Bloody comfy and cheap to run. And before anyone gets going about gas lacking power, rubbish...hardly notice the difference.

Hope this helps.

The 4.7L V8 should never be fitted with gas. They're prone to blowing heads when fitted with gas, you must have been lucky.

can i just chime in i had a 2007 Pathfinder Diesel Auto, and never again would i touch a nissan.

Just a slight change in weight/wind can shift fuel consumption from 21L/100km to 28-29l/100km. The torque converter on these things (if auto) are just horrible.

the interior of the nissans are just poorly made.
