Three pulled from water after boat swamped
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2011-07-24 13:24
We, Carnarvon sea rescue got a call yesterday to head over to the islands and bring back three anglers whose boat had been swamped. They were anchored in about 20-30 metres of water when they copped a wave over the stern of the boat and another one straight after filling the boat and causing it to capsize, tossing the three in to the water.
Luckily there was another boat not far off that noticed the esky floating off then realised that the boat wasn't there any more and sped over to pull them out. Because it was so quick they didn't even have time to grab life jackets or the epirb .
They managed to save all the stuff that was floating but sadly the boat is on the bottom in 20 metres of water.

Going to send down salvo
Going to send down salvo divers? surely a few lift bags and a air pump system and they will rise it?

Not sure
Not sure what they have in mind, no doubt they will try to salvage it.
They also didn't hear a radio call from another boat out not too far away from there of a white pointer paying them a visit.

another one at waroorra today
one dinghy picked up by swell and capsized. dumped onto the reef. another went in to help the first and got swamped. 3 blokes went into the water with jackets. another fisher eventually got them out with the help of coral bay vmr.
what would we do without flares and vollies hey ?
cheers

Vollies
All the groups are in need of vollies especially the smaller coastal towns like ourselves,Onslow, Exmouth Denham, Leeman, Lancelin and the others down south.
Most of us are getting on in age and younger ones with some time to spare are always welcome.
Just a note, on the last Friday evening of each month we have a sausage sizzle at our building starting around 5.30- 6.00pm with a licence bar providing a good feed for $5 a head as a fund raiser.

Vollies
On that subject, how does one get involved at a Volunteer level?
Also, can you wet a sneaky line whilst "on duty"?

Front up at your local groups headquarters and join up. They will run through what they provide in the way of training etc and when their training takes place.
No fishing is done from our [Carnarvon] boats and to my knowledge from any of the other groups boats.

Thinking the same thing, Alfred.
There is a reason that anchors/anchoring gear and the cleat/bollard to tie it to are at THE FRONT OF THE BOAT, and it's not so you have extra room for your lunch/coldies/blowup doll at the back.
And regarding Muppet's post on the incident at Waroora...if one boat capsizes and another gets swamped going in after it, what does that tell you about where they were parked in the first place?
Yes, VMR is an invaluable service and we should do whatever we can to support them. And we should carry all the proper safety gear, not just 'cause it's the rules, but because it may save our life one day. But ultimately no one or no thing can help us if we don't help ourselves in the first place.

Anchored
They were anchored from the bow not the stern but with the offshore breeze their stern was pointing out to sea. So its a case of being in the wrong spot at the right time.

We are so grateful for the Volunteers
at Leeman Sea Rescue, some of them are close friends and we (when in town) will always gosay hello, any fund raisers we always contribute, swing by their centre in Leeman, they are just past the town ramp, straight down the road till you can't go any further and you will see as we all call it Sea Rescue Ramp. One of our friends donated a dinghy for Leeman Sea Rescue to go out to the Vaill II is anchored mainly in the busy time of year. We are also members. Wonder if they will have the new sea rescue boat next time we are up or ready for the summer season.
Old fart has been towed in once in 30 old yrs of fishing, ruddy electrics on the motor.
Glad the rescue went well for all concerned.
