Buying car from interstate.

Gday all, just thought i'd see if anyone here know whats the go with buying a car from interstate in regards to paying transfer fees/stamp duty and rego.

eg if i bought a car in Queensland do i transfer it over to me over there under its QLD rego and pay tranfer fees over there, then bring it over to W.A and do a rego transfer over here and only pay the cost of rego an inspection here in W.A?

Like wise i am selling tinnie to  my brother in the N.T, does he just pay me for it and i fill out a stat dec saying its his then he takes it back to the N.T and rego's it up there to the N.T roads? I think he said he only needed to rego the trailer up there as recreational boats still dont have to be registered up there. What do i do in regards to informing W.A department that th Tinnie is now up in the N.T?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had experience with these situations.

I will be giving DofT a call tomorrow anyway, but most likely will be waiting on the phone for ages only to get a half arsed answer.

I bought my torana from nsw. The nsw rego was void I just handed the plates in then took the car over the pits and paid for wa rego. However this was 3 years ago and I believe that now the laws have changed so that if the car has nsw rego u can transfer it straight to wa licence not too sure for other states tho mate

2006 though.

Bought a 100 series TD in Qland and drove it back. In qland they let you put it in your name if you undertake to transfer when you get home. Stamp duty there $950, here would have been $3700 odd.

Drive it back $56 over the pits, pay rego here, refund rego in Qland.

piece of piss. Hardest part is finding a couple to look at before going over there otherwise you could be there for weeks.

Cost $48K for 18 month old car, probably still worth near that now unbelievably.

Fire away with any other questions?

Cheers smash. Thats what i was looking at doing too. When you think about the cost of stamp duty for a car in QLD compared to the same priced car in W.A, it actually works out cheaper to fly over, pay QLD stamp duty, pay for fuel to drive back, pay for pit inspection and W.A rego, than it would be to just buy in W.A.

I was looking at a $40000 4x4 and in W.A stamp duty was around $2500.00. in QLD it would be $780.00

Bloody ridiculous. Now i know why all the hire campers and stuff you see getting around are all QLD registered.

worth it

Depending on how much your spending, stamp duty alone covers the cost. I believe the Qland gov cottoned on that they might as well have the stamp duty, and once its yours already WA cant charge it. Basically at this end it cost $56 (may have gone up) and rego.

My costs were

flights-FF points

1 nights accom

$1000 transfer (rushing 4pm on a friday cos you cant do it interstate). A lovely RTA lass helped me there and gave me her contact (!!!) to send the rego in for refund.

$800 diesel

4 days driving (good trip) was going to truck it but just spur of the moment F-it, hit the hiway!

and $56.

Not sure how NSW and Vic rules work though.

good luck!

I do believe also that you now don't have to go over the pits with a interstate vehicle for a new states rego, i'm sure there is info on the net mind you.

Hi Brucesta, yeah read that

Hi Brucesta, yeah read that and thought it would apply, but unfortuantly it seems that you have to have owned the car for the last 12 months. So seeing that i will be just buying it, i'll need to get it inspected. Bugger. Oh well will still work out cheaper than buying one here in WA.

Thanks mate. Looks like i might be headed to either Adelaide or Sydney in the next week or so. Have paid for 4x4 in each city to have pre purchase inspections done, so i get a better idea of the 4x4 before forking out for a flight only to get there and find something i dont like. Should be a 'FUN' drive back anyhoo.
