What do you want to know?

Fri, 2013-04-12 20:16

Used to live in the biggest hole in Aust, Bunbury ---the only thing wrong with the place is that there isn't enough dirt available to fill the hole in, for too long, fished with the pros on and off on, salmon, cray, shark [ when you would pull the nets by hand], beach seining for herring , skippy, tailor etc. Did a lot of rec fishing from Albany all the way round the coast up as far as Preston Beach Did the first of many trips to Quobba around 1970, before anyone knew what potential it had, cost $2 a night in the shearers quarters!!!

Moved to Two Rocks and bought the first of many boats, rec crayfishing, chasing dhueys etc and many trips to Gnaraloo and Exmouth. Mate asked if I wanted to go pro shark fishing between Exmouth and nearly to Broome, doing 2 week trips, got MC 5 and MED 2 , fished up there for 6-7 years, then we got ripped off and the whole venture folded so went demersal netting from Bunbury through to Windy harbour, mainly concentrating on Geo bay through to Augusta, plus salmon fishing during the off seasons.

Back stuffed up so retired to Carnarvon, where I'd wetlined out of in the mid 70s, about 10 years back, now tied up with sea rescue for last 7 years, put a net in when I need mullet for smoking or bait, head over to islands when the weather permits and chase the odd muddy or two.

One son lives up in Exmouth so head up there pretty regular for a change in scenery.

There you go, pretty well explains where and when the knowledge comes from

$2

Mon, 2013-04-15 07:01

The station owner asked us if he thought $2 was too much because he had no idea and then very few people from down south were aware of what was on offer.
We fished Whistling rock and my first 4 casts involved going back to the tackle box and bringing out another new spool of line, started at 20lb and finished up with 40lb[ that was what was planned to use as trace line] before I managed to stop one, 68lb cleaned macky while the mate landed a GT even bigger that bottomed out the scales.

Soulos boys

Sat, 2013-04-13 20:33

Worked with all the Soulos/Lucas boys and even did a trip or two with the grandfather when I was still in high school, used to do trips on the shark boats with Luca, Peter, Mickey Lucas, Angelo the Greek and the Tritsarolis's leaving Friday nights and home Sunday arvo then back to school Monday.
Manuel's son Nick runs or did run a shark boat for years, Mano is his son.

shark fishing

Sat, 2013-04-13 10:41

Those old pro shark fishing vids you took were awesome John, its unfortunate with this day and age you can't put them online due to the doo gooders, but it was interesting to see what sort of monster would come up next back in those days.

Lucky

Sat, 2013-04-13 20:38

We were lucky we had an overseas market for everything so we could take all the big stuff that would have normally been let go.
The tapes were just a snap shot compared to what we caught each day, one would get a bit blasé and treat it as a normal thing.

Certainly miss it, its a way of life not just a job like most other occupations.

One bit is special

Mon, 2013-04-15 06:42

There is a bit on one that shows son Jeff guiding a huge dusky whaler aboard as its pulled up by the winch, its bitten off about a metre behind the dorsal fin by one bite, it would be over a metre in diameter where the bite occurred so how big was the one that bit it in half.
At an educated guess the dusky would have gone over 5 metres if complete.

They show fishing from east of Bedout island all the way through to north of Exmouth

Um... I live in Bunghole too

Sun, 2013-04-14 22:29

Um... I live in Bunghole too but have just bought a house in the Shire of Capel so maybe I'm safe

Most of my fishing is either north or south of the 'Bung' but I do have some great Snapper spots not far offshore when the season is happening.

Could be a great town if half of local gov got ousted!

Bun Vegas ain't toooo bad, stoked to here your history canarvonite, I've spoke to Mano

Gone then

Mon, 2013-04-15 13:40

There was a white pointers tail nailed on the side of the old fishermans jetty that was about 6 foot across and a threshers tail over 12 foot long.

Seen heaps of whites and huge tigers but the biggest was ???, we were steaming down the west side of Barrow island when I spotted this big bugger racing in towards the boat , it came in on the starboard side then ran straight in to the metal shroud around the prop, stalling the V12 Cat like we'd run aground. Restarted motor and dropped it in to gear and it stalled again, restarted and dropped it in reverse, you could feel the whole 80 foot steel boat shudder with every turn of the prop as it tore the shark to bits. One whole lobe of its liver floated up and it was bigger than any shark liver I had seen by miles. Looking over the side you could see the carcass sinking towards the bottom, I nearly cried----- watching what could have been 10 grands worth of meat, fins and jaws disappearing.
