Technique to land a monster?
I was wondering if you guys have a certain technique how to land monsters like rays/sharks. I hooked a ray on Sunday. Intentionally, not by accident. Stoped it after around 150 m and slowly reeled it in. Half a turn of the reel at the time. Probably the biggest workout I’ve had in years. (Well I’ve been lazy bastard lately.. :) ) It took me about 30 minutes to get on around 15 meters, when my line failed. Probably as I started to lift the ray from the bottom and it didn’t want to go. So it was bit disappointing after such an effort.I was thinking, with monster like this, as long as there is a tension in the line, what if I left it like this (have a rest) and let the fish to get tired, than fight it all the way. Would it work?
It was a good experience anyway.

tell you the truth mate alot
tell you the truth mate alot of people dont know this but alot of people do the fish shark ray whatever controls you and your rod if the fish dont want to come in it wont specialy rays they stop dead sometimes on the sand and will cover themselfs in sand and they will basicly stick to the floore making them hevyer so just take it slow with rays and you will land them most times but when the ray stops you stop reeling in just keep tension on the line and wait for the ray to move
fishing isnt a sport its a lifestyle

yea. i agree with
yea. i agree with fisherman1992. rays are really a waiting thing. might even take half a day to reel one in. my mate and i took 40 min to land a 20kg eagle ray and took 3 ppl to pull it up with the cliff gaff and a normal gaff which ripped through it's mouth

Half a day? I was knackered
Half a day? I was knackered after some 30, 40minutes. I don’t know how heavy might have this one been. I reckon around a meter across the wings when I saw it briefly on the surface. I should probably make one spare gaff as well, by the sound of it.

Only because you don't know
Only because you don't know how to cook it.
Once upon a time most Aussies could not eat a fish if it still had it's head on. Some still can't, but at least times are changing.

you foreign types with your delicious sashimi and tempura batter! I'm outraged by the intrusion of your enormously tasty cuisine into everyday culture......
What's wrong with a dry over cooked skinless fillet of fish with store bought tartare sauce? Next you'll be telling me that dhufish wings are worth keeping and raw crayfish is a delicacy worth trying! Outrageous.......

I actually want to eat it.
I actually want to eat it. The opinions seems to be different on edibility, some people quite like them. So the only way to find out, is to try it out. Otherwise I have no interest in harming the animals.

A big ray at port dennison
It was so big that 3 of us had to fight it, When we got it to the rocks it had 3 sets of rusty old hooks in it mouth
Which we removed befor letting it free And that was on 30lb line

Theres no secret to landing these monsters ..... dont give the fish a chance to rest is the main thing - saying that if it wants to go let it but having a good drag with constant pressure on the fish will make it tire , then its time for u to give it stick and gain a few meters back - these battles can last for many hours so u got to have patience and u wont always get to land these fish.
Iv landed a lot of sharks/rays and its back breaking , to save your energy - rest when the fish is running by flat sticking it and letting the drag do the work , when the fish starts turning thats when u start working ......
Iv had a few monster fights that have lasted 4 plus hrs and a few that are done in 2mins after getting spooled and loosing 800m of braid/line by monster sharks that cant be stopped.
were u targeting the ray's ?

I will ask you for some
I will ask you for some tasty recipes Alfred. :)
I thought I was doing pretty well to reeling it in. Then it probably dug itself in sand or there was a rock which cut the line. RAGBAG, Lancelin jetty is pretty sure bet… I thing I will have another go on the weekend. I’ve bought some heavy braid, which should help…carnarvonite

Sit down
If you've got a big ray on and its buried itself walk back up the beach keeping the pressure on and sit down with the rod between your legs like you're in a game chair and the butt of the rod buried in the sand
Just crank up as much pressure you can put on it and sit it out.Sooner or later its going to move or you will lose patience and bust it off like I do as soon as I know what it is ,not wasting fishing time on something I would release anyway
