Sad day in Kalbarri
Submitted by Mick on Tue, 2009-11-24 13:16
Sad day in Kalbarri today with a young humpback beaching itself on the Oyster's. Although alot of effort was put into saving the young fella he ended up perishing. Apparently he had a large wound consistent with an attack by a large bitey. There was also a large commotion a kilometre or so out to sea early this morning. This may have been the outcome. Alot of peple were visibly upset. RIP lil cetacean

Finally
After many months I finally got some fishing in!!
Went with a couple of mates to the S bend over the weekend.
Couple of problems meant a very limited fishing time Arrived Fri pm. Checked out the beaches and fishing spots afterwe set up camp. Mike (the expert - 40+years ) droe the 4WD that day - no prablems. The next day Pete (the owner- no experience) wanted to drive his vehicle. Major problems. Had no idea and got us bogged regularly. Wouldn't listen to the expert until we had water slapping the wheels.
Finally got to the spot we wanted to fish only to find a group had beaten us to it. a bunch of Guys with Quad bikes were also at the caravan park and beat us to every site we tried to fish from. When they weren't there the wind was!!
Sunday we did a bit of fishing in the calm with the tide ouot. Practice run mainly. I got 6 herring and four Dart. in the late morning. One herring actually measured 300mm -thought it was a tailor to start with!
Sunday eveningt finally got to the spot we had tried to get all weekend. Mike got8 tailor in an hour withPete catching one. mike has a seriously injured shoulder after a MB accident and is waiting to have an Op on it. These Russians are tough!
!I got nothing but weed and lost rig on the rocks. Not even a nibble. Ended up irritating my hips (Arthritis) and gave it away.
Left Monday morning to return to Perth. 20 ks out of Dongara trying to work out why we were going so slow when tthe tyre on the camper blew and smoke billowed out -thought the camper was going to catch alight. Appears the braek seized- serious smoke from the brake drum. Finally got that fixed enough to get home.
At least we got to et a line and caught some

Sad....
kinda I guess, but that life really. Animals live, animals die - humans included. If not, the earth would be pretty crowded by now......

yes
also died.
Problem with calves beaching themselves is that they are reliant on their mother for food (milk, I believe they need about 500L a day), so there is nothing to do but let them die or euthanise them if possible because if you do "rescue" them, they will die of starvation anyway as they are unable to fend for themselves.

plus side
Always sad to see any animal die helplessly like that, especially a young one, but as huggy said its just part of nature. It could have washed up on any stretch of isolated beach and no one would have ever known about it and nature would be left to run its course. The plus side the way i see it, years ago we never had reports of whales washing up dead on beaches in the metro area now theres like 5 or more this season alone. It to me is just nature taking its course and indicative of the whale population healthily growing and recovering from days where they were hunted

your right about it being
your right about it being sad to see an animal die like that . i heard on the radio today that the numbers of whales around are well and truly on the comeback . good to see. now we just got to stop the whale hunts for research by those other people
