Sound determined. I wish you all the best mate in your ambition. Would need a pretty big boat for a 4-6M shark.... That may be your stumbling block here.
I know whites are protected but the only definition of that I can find is that they can't be killed or harmed. In South Africa even hooking them is illegal, even if it was unintentional. I haven't seen any legislation like that here but if anyone knows different please let me know. Cheers.
Research is a whole different kettle of fish (sharks?) mate. If you can get ethics approval from the right governing bodies you have much more freedom in what you can do. I assume this would be the case with all GW catching (emphasis on assuming)
Yeah, fair enough. I just found it on youtube a while back and enjoyed watching it so thought I would share it. May help with some tips if anyone does hook up to a monster shark
...would that cover any injuries/damage brought about by this little mission? 'cause I don't think too many insurance companies would come to the party if they knew the whole thing was premeditated.
Mind you, bullshitting insurance companies is common practice....seems like every time we hear about a capsizing, it's a "rogue wave"...never about being too close to a breaking reef, alcohol is never involved, nobody ever puts too much horsepower on their boat, never is there a case of poor boathandling. Yep, always a "rogue wave"!
So if the crew and boat get eaten by the giant shark they were trying to catch....rogue wave!
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.
Shark fishing as a game species is very common over east - or was while I was there and before tag and release replaced most capture tournaments. Catching a 6m tiger shark is going to be quite the event from a 6m boat!
I would think if you are looking for a sea monster the search would be a little wider than the 3 mile.
As said before I've got 6.8m glassboat and be more than happy to do this but I would be concerned about the damage that could be done to the boat ,I've caught 5 foot tigers here before and the damage to the side of the boat is not good
The plan would be to drop the anchor and move well away from the shark before setting the hook. I want to catch the thing, not wear it. It wouldn't be possible to bring a big shark to the boat until it was spent even if I wanted to, which I don't!
get on the net book a trip to Karratha,Ill charge half fuel and you can bring the beer.garranteed lots of sharks from 6 foot to 4.5 metres. just have to say you might get a rankin or red as well before they move in but theres a little spot up here that is loaded with them , just tell me your coming as I have to take the day off. Boat is 7 metres
Yep, a bit suss. Has own gear etc plus skippers ticket yet no boat? Maybe has a dinghy or doesn't want to wreck his own boat? hmmm the mind boggles. . .
Well for a start you are trying to enter into a commercial agreement with someone, you are opening yourself up to all sorts of legal aspects. Secondly you are openly advertising that you want to hunt a big shark, the really big sharks in this area are mainly Whites and they are protected. The legallity is is that if you catch and inadvertantly kill one, you and the person taking you out are in all sorts of bother. I'm not having a dig at you personally but it all sounds a bit big game hunterish. Do you really think that's on in metro waters?
Just to keep the powers that be happy, let me re-define my proposal.
I would like to join somebody on a fishing trip that they are going on anyway. The skipper can fish for whatever he wants to, I will fish for what I want to.
I like to use a big bait on a big hook. I'm not intending to catch a great white but if I do so inadvertently I will make every effort to release it as safely as possible.
Some people might say I should cut the line immediately and leave the hook, terminal tackle, steel trace and a long length of heavyweight mono attached to the shark. Personally, I don't believe this would be in the sharks best interests so I would endeavour to get it to the boat so I can unhook it. I will then try to swim it along side the boat until it is fully revived before releasing it. I don't believe there is anything written in law that contradicts my personal interpretation of what is safest for the shark.
In the unlikely event the shark happened to die during this process despite my genuine best efforts to avoid it I suspect I would face the same sort of penalty that somebody who was completely sober, driving with due care and attention within the speed limit would incur if they happened to hit a pedestrian who jumped in front of their car without looking. Ie nothing.
However, based on all the video footage I've seen of whites being caught, hauled out of the ocean, tagged and then put back in to swim calmly away I don't believe the species is particularly prone to suffering harm as a result of being caught. If I did, I would not risk engaging in any behaviour that might involve hooking a white, even inadvertently.
For the pleasure of accompanying the skipper on his pre-planned trip I will give them a pack of beer to say thankyou. Obviously there will be a cost incurred in regard to fuel, wear & tear and depreciation of the skippers asset ie the boat. It is not possible to calculate exactly what this cost would be so I'll offer to give them whatever I can scrape together out of my glove box in notes and change. If that happens to amount to a few hundred dollars it would be a matter of pure chance.
'However, based on all the video footage I've seen of whites being caught, hauled out of the ocean, tagged and then put back in to swim calmly away I don't believe the species is particularly prone to suffering harm as a result of being caught. If you are talking big, I hope you dont mean Great White. From memory that would be illegal.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Saw a vid this week someone hooked a salmon
then a GW decided it wanted a piece of said salmon, and then chaos followed.
Even when targeting a legal fish, it is possible to hook an "illegal" fish.
Would be a bit stiff, hard to control shark by-catch when targeting sharks.
Looks intent on doing it for the experience rather than a trophy so, either way shark should be going back.

Clarification

Boab
I used to hire a 6m Polycraft occasionally and was intending to use that but the company is no longer hiring it.
I did consider Boab but I don't think their biggest boat is big enough to do this safely. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I have now had a couple of offers from skippers with bigger boats so it looks like it will be happening at some point. Watch this space...
