The Department of Environment and Conservation is investigating water drains from Leederville to Lake Monger to determine what caused the deaths of more than 70 fish in the Swan River.

The dead fish, mainly bream, were found near the Barrack Street jetty yesterday afternoon.

DEC environmental hazards manager Ken Raine said it appeared the fish died as a result of discharge from a nearby drain.

“We are looking over a number of sites including dewatering sites,” he said.
Water and fish samples have been sent to the Chemistry Centre for analysis and results are expected in a week.

Mr Raine said there was concern about other animals being affected through the food chain.

“With the fish killed ,there is the possibility of other animals being affected,” he said.

If investigations determine the fish deaths were caused by a chemical dumped into a river, the person responsible will face hefty fines.

The Health Department has advised people not to swim or fish in the immediate area.
