Surprise catch
Just for interest wanted to ask this questions?
Went out last saturday from Dampier and despite the forecast was rather blowy, so couldnt head out wide. Started with a lazy lazy time with the afternoon wind predicted (wrong) to calm down heaps, so we intended to fish into the night starting at 2pm.
Went to a regular snapper spot that always has the goods on these fish and the odd CTrout etc. Was delighted to bring a good Bluebone in, but was very surprised with the next drop.
At first with the hit and fight I called it for a bloody Dusky Morwong (which often turn up here), but soon the colour red appeared, and onboard came a very nice 8kg Red Emporor. I was very stocked at the unusual catch for this spot.
I didnt look at the screen on the sounder (I was still getting over it) but the Mrs the good deckie she is checked the screen and the depth was 8.6m.
I was surprised at the red, but more so with that depth.
Question then: How shallow has anyone caught a red in? I believe it was a huge fluke.

10m
Have caught one undersized and one size in 10m up there and also at Steep Point in about 17m. Would have been a pleasant surprise.

Nice catch
We've picked a couple up in 12-15m out from Coral Bay that were probably around that same size... probably the 6kg mark actually so a bit smaller.

Have caught reds in Exmouth
Have caught reds in Exmouth in 9m. Pretty common spot too. Found if we cast out the back of the boat as far as possible we got past the spanglies and found a few reds.

Nice Bonus
Nells, a few years back I speared a red not that far off Malus in 7-8mtrs of water, only went about 4kg. But like you said always a welcomed bonus.

cheers guys
Yes a red is always pleasant, but very unexpected. Interesting to hear that they do come in very shallow sometimes.
Because of the wind it also was only a 20m steam at 20kts, so certainly not far and wide.
Might just bait more appropriately for reds next time there just to double check, but then Mr Taxman comes out to play. It is also one of our "sporty spots" where we drop the big sticks because it is shallow and Noah doesnt realy pinch the fish.
Out wide no sport with "come here sticks" and skulldragging technigue to beat the bastards.

Did an ROV job on one of the new pipelines right into minimum depth of about 5 meters for our vessel.
Pipeline had only been in a few months and there were CLOUDS of juvenile reds along it. Hard to judge size but definitely juvenile colours. Swarming over the cameras etc.

Sounds like I might settle for unusual
but not rare. I am surprised that they do get in that close because they are known as a deeper species, but I'll take them anyway I can. 2nd fav eating fish after KGW. hence the strange babbling on the boat. Deckie siad I spat what I needed out to bring it onboard all in one word -pliersnetboggagaff and since it was very well hooked I just lifted it onboard!!!
Surprised for sure, and I dont get that excited getting them deep at all. But thats what I love about fishing. You dont know what you might get, and you have to have a line in to have a chance.

Come to think off it
Last year we got 3 reds and a Coral trout near this spot, but it was high tide and 14m, which I know was odd. But its was the depth of the latest at low tide that had me spun out. Will try and post those pics, I have them somewhere.
