Summer boating safety.Take a mate!

www.perthnow.com.au/news/perth/missing-fisherman-case-for-coronial-inquiry-in-perth-ng-b88661227z

With this Inquiry now on , a with that recent accident and very, very lucky rescue surrounding the lone crayfisherman overboard with leg tangle on rope, just putting it out there,

lone fishing can be  a quiet , me time exercise , or it can go pear shaped very quickly, as seen in the last few years.

Be safe , and take a mate.( if you can)........................... hey that sorta rymes.

Wed, 2017-11-15 16:23

I go out solo a fair bit but usually stick around the 3 Mile but have head out up to 9nm offshore alone. It’s a good message but sometimes I just really enjoy the solitude on the water or make a last minute decision to head out or my deckie has too much to drink the night before and cancels.

My experience boating mate laughs at me but when I go solo but I wear an auto inflatable life jacket with a PLB attached to it and always wear my killswitch which I’ve now upgraded to a wireless auto killswitch and log on with an extremely conservative return time and extend that as needed. I also write down the Mrs an idea of the areas I’ll be fishing. Also been meaning to vac seal a flare to carry on my jacket when solo too. Hopefully that's enough if the worst ever happens...

I go solo as well sometimes, as far as the Abrolhos.

Good message but sometimes we also need to manage and/or accept an element of risk ourselves as well.

Frosty, where did you get the wireless kill from, been looking around for one myself at an affordable price.

I got it off an ebay seller in the US for $250AUD but he only had one so I don't think he deals in them. They're $355 locally from Rib Rescue.

The only other place you seem to get them online cheap is Amazon for $265AUD but... the seller doesn't post to Australian so you have to use a 3rd party like shipitto (unless you know anyone in the US) which will cost around $35-50AUD.

Solo

Most of my fishing is solo - I have no mates! I also go when the conditions allow and as we know with the forecast, you can't really trust it a week out so a deckie only gets a days notice usually.

Plus, not being the most productive fisher, I feel bad when I advertise deckie spots and can't put someone on a fish.

Risky Business ? ( no , not you Tom)

Thu, 2017-11-16 07:56

Like Jack and Rob say solo trips can be and are managed all the time by lots of folks , and Jack sounds like he,s thought it through, and

is managing the risk well.

And of course we still dont know ( and prob never will ) what went wrong for the Mindarie fisher and even if 2 or more were on board it may not have helped if he hit a whale or something

, I guess just being up in Coral Bay last year when the 2 fellas were lost , ( we had spoke to them at the ramp that week ) has just re enforced in my mind , that there is a

higher level of danger out there than we all sometimes think, and thats when it bites ya , when you dont see it coming.

I do some shorebased reef and rock fishing , regualary go 30miles out with a mate , ride quad bikes up huge sand dunes and have a 125hp drag quad , as well as working in the mining

industry driving gear on nightshifts etc , so I dont think im a square when it comes to risky activitys , I guess I just hate seeing that headline about another boater or fisher being lost, cheers.

Solo

Doesn't taking a deckie put them at risk? As in the case if someone were to hit a whale or have some catastrophic boat failure, wouldn't you rather only put yourself at risk and not selfishly expect someone else to rescue you?

P.S. Only playing devils advocate. I agree people should exercise due care and caution in all activities. I don't think having someone else there all the time makes it safer for you by default.

I agree that by just having another along , it doesnt make it safer everytime , there just seemed to be a rash of incidents were solo boys were getting into trouble

and I guess by having another along its another set of eyes and ears as well as a sounding board for the skipper to run things by.

Going on the same thinking , sea rescue doesnt send single man crews out there do they? .( that way only one would be lost too)

 Sea rescue certainly won’t

Thu, 2017-11-16 18:37

Sea rescue certainly won’t if they have a choice. I did a couple of solo tows when there wasn’t a crew available though.

Same as you Dale

I enjoy my solitude and the peace and quite my time on the ocean gives me, always wear a inflatable life jacket have all the safety gear at hand, but, I'm also the first to acknowledge that it's a dangerous environment and just when and if you take your eyes and mind off just where you are the ocean can and will jump up and bite you.

To all who venture out to enjoy a bit of fishing in what ever form may your gods watch over you. I think we are still allowed to mention him aren't we, too bad if not.

what and deal with the last minute "sorry I gotta mow the lawns in the morning then I can go" or "gotta be back by 9 am to walk the poodle..." etc

Cut back on that a while back, own a boat to go when you want!

That's fair enough.. just thought that you guys would enjoy each other's company and I suppose as keen fisherman you wouldn't let each other down with last minute cancelations.

I bet my left nut I wouldn't pull out if I committed to going fishing with someone.. ditching someone last minute is piss poor thing to do.

but that's just me

Thu, 2017-11-16 20:50

On my birthday in May this year I invited my brother for a morning sesh and he had the bright idea of leaving at 4:30am. Sitting in my car at 4:20 keeping warm and I get a phone call from his wife saying he had too much to drink.

Not a family do goes by where I don't mention the time he had to get his wife to "call in sick for fishing"
