Star drag versus Lever drag
Submitted by Batty on Mon, 2011-08-15 19:36
Was after some advice on the advantages/ disadvantages between star drag and lever drag for bottom bouncing, fairly new to all this and only have a cheap star drag and was looking at upgrading soon,
I've not used a lever drag before and wondered how quick you can put them into freespool and pay line out when you start to get a nibble, I find it better if a bite is developing not to let the lead move, seems to be alot more productive on hook ups
Any advice much appreciated

I find it just as quick if not quicker. Leverdrags rule for bottom bouncing and trolling. Star drags are old school. But rule for casting.

Yeah personaly i much prefer
Yeah personaly i much prefer lever drag, so much quicker and easier to adjust the drag which makes it easier to give line when a fish is playing with the bait and u dont wanna jerk the bait around. Also great when trolling to set the spread and then set the hooks.

Can't tell you how many fish
Can't tell you how many fish I've lost to star sh#^%%^6ting drag. Lever any day. You can apply any amount of pressure you want. Awesome for trolling.

Definately for casting. Will
Definately for casting. Will be buying a trinidad 20a before summer. You cant get proper freespool with a lever.

The trinidad A has got to be
The trinidad A has got to be the sexiest reel ive seen in ages and deals with a few of the problems the torium had. Im thinking of blowing my tax return on the 30.
I have heard there are a couple of lever drags out now designed for casting. I cant remember which reels but ill see if I can find where I was reading about it. Apparently putting it into free spool lifted the spool out from center and set it off somehow for better freespool than standard lever drags or something like that? Have you heard anything about this, I think it was a daiwa reel?

I honestly don't understand
I honestly don't understand the debate with LD vs SD! At the end of the day it's drag pressure and performs its job fine whether it may be star or lever drag. To be honest i really don't mind and am quite comfortable fishing star drags as a few of my reels are.
I just look for the quality of the reel and the drag pressure/performance under load.
I'd quite happily choose a star drag over a lever if the reel suited the right application, many of mid to high range reel still come with star drag and tell me how many of these reels have been tested over the years?
Just my 2c worth.

I almost totally agree, the
I almost totally agree, the only situation where I reckon LDs are required is dropping baits back for sailies/marlin on circles, the gradual pressure you can acheive with an LD seems to do the trick. There are some great casting LDs out there.

lever for trolling here
lever for trolling here where you need to change strike drag to fighting drag , and i found star much better and less of a pita for bottom bouncing.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Yep definately agree with that one Daisy, LD's are a certainty for that situation!
Mind you i've had plenty of success with spin reels and switching.

Haven't ventured into the switch baiting with big spinners yet, looks like fun, do you use circles in this situation?

Yeh I agree exactly with what
Yeh I agree exactly with what Samc hs to say. No difference long as the reel performs great. At the end of the day its just applying the right ammount of drag pressure to the situation you are in. Regardless make a mistake on both and it could be a lost fish. My shimano Torium has never let me down yet and that has a star drag. I use it for bottom bashing all the time. However now im more into spin reels with jiggs :D . Just need some decent weather.
