Squiding- lure preference. . .
Submitted by DieHard on Tue, 2010-09-21 18:29
Hey all,
before you all say have you used the search engine, yes i have and nothing conclusive.
I am slowly getting into squiding and found some ground that holds squid.
i have enough money to be a couple Yo-Zuri squid jigs.
I currently have 2 Aurie-Q ace 3.0 in pink and 2.5 in brown.
what i would like to know is what colours are preffered at night and at day.
and lastly how do you work the jig? like a soft plastic or with slow lifts etc.
Cheers,
Eric

longer the rod the longer
longer the rod the longer the jig will stay in the water and also come in slower, but pretty much depends on lure sink rate, how deep water is, example is your fishing in 5 metres of water with a decent jig it sinks pretty slow so count like 5-10 seconds then jig jig jig uplift motion then before you go for another repeated process lift the rod to see if any squid has grabbed on if nothing keep repeating the process. lure colour success pink and green colours

green in 2.5?
and how do you know what a squid feels like? i would assume no headshakes more of a tug?
and rod is 6.8ft and pretty stiff. but it will do.

what ever jig that can make
what ever jig that can make it down to the bottom slowly is a good weight i believe as all of mine caught are on the bottom or just off the bottom unless they chase it to the boat then i drop it back and they usually attack :)

I tend to favor 3 and 3.5
I tend to favor 3 and 3.5 jigs, at least you can gst them down and work them fast. My go-to is an olive/brown natural, but I mix it up with pinks, oranges and greens.

best to use brighter colours
best to use brighter colours on gloomy/overcast days or dirty water and the darker colours in bright sunlight! but having said that, I just use bright colours all the time, and more often than not out fish others using the duller colours.

go it to luke R's store and
go it to luke R's store and have a talk to him he has a big range of jigs.
i would go for the standard colour to start with say pinks, oranges, blues, and green. then as you start getting more and more get yourself some browns, and dark green and bait fish types.
like people have said mix it up till you catch the squid. you might not get them on a fast retrive so slow it down then you might get them if not change retrive again then if nothing change jigs clour then size drop down if you can.
i used to like the 2.5s and thats all i bought but then Flangies (james) said that he prefers 3.0s and i now agree. you can cast further, the sink fast so you can cover more ground, and wheres the 2.5 will catch big and small squid the smaller squid will normaly take it first. but if you have a 3.0 you have a better chance at a bigger squid but the small ones will still take it.
it all about how you use the jig and which ones you thing are better.

Squid on......
Check my latest vid out Eric - you'll learn a lot from it.
http://fishwrecked.com/forum/squid-13
If squid are there, they will generally attack a lure - I watched this last weekend doing some more filming. We deliberatly didn't let the squid get a lure and then changed colour/style. Same result, he/she chased the jig down again.
Big tip from watching them under water;
If there is alot of tugging, this means that the squid has caught ya lure with its feeder arms - therefore take it easy pulling it in - the legs do snap off.
If more weight on the jig, the squid has been hooked in the body/main legs, then rip it in and get ya jig back in that area again to catch his mates.
After a couple, you'll have it sussed.
Cheers Pete
