squidding

was out squidding the other day with a heap of boats arround and noticed everyone lands there squid by hand, I dont understand why fisho's dont use a net, we use an enviro it makes life alot easier and the boat ink free. Also the argument between rods and handlines, we use rods because when the squid propulses backwards the rod takes up the motion, i dont know how you would do it with a hand line.

Always use a rod
1 usually have 2 or 3 light 6' rods in the holders - they indicate immediately when a squid hits and keep tension on. Always use a landing net- give it a twist to lock the squid in and then a few shakes to make them fire off their ink. Clean and sure.

Pretty easy to grab the
Pretty easy to grab the squid behind the head and you can control it pretty well. You can aim it if you need to get the ink out too (or if a mate is begging for an inking :p). You grab the squid in the water so they rarely ink the boat coming in. The butterfly nets dont work too bad either and you can get squid gaff as well.
With handlines, theres usually a bit of stretch in the mono, and you can either let the line slip through your fingers or use your arm to go with it (though not like our squids are all that big that it would necessarily be required). I use rods, but having a squid jig on a handline can be useful if you have one follow your bait up when fishing for something else.

Both!
Use rods for casting/retrieving and leave jigs hanging off handlines at the same time, although if the handline goes off in the middle of one of your retrieves, you have to put the rod down with the jig still out there and risk getting it hung up in the weed/losing it!
We manage with the "grab the head" method, but no matter how careful we are, we usually cop the ink once or twice each trip...adds to the excitement I suppose!
And yeah, as Matt said, always leave a handline with a jig tied to it in the boat whenever you go fishing....we've had squid/cuttlefish follow hooked fish up even out in 50 metres and having that jig handy pays off big!

Interesting topic!! I do it
Interesting topic!!
I do it by hand, simply because i leave the squid in the water for a while to emtpy all his ink. and Leaving the squid in the water more times than not attracts more squid to it.
One thing you said 7739 was you leave rods int eh rod holder while drifting??? is this effective??
I only use one jig at a time and always use the pump action.
one thing i noticed the other day was the squid were often swimming last the jig then attacking it from the front!

On a rod in the rod holder,
On a rod in the rod holder, if its a lite rod, they simply can't get off, its like being stuck on a rubber band for them.

it's very effective - i usually have the 2 or 3 rods in the holders and one in hand after KG's or whatever. As Till said, they have a lot of trouble getting off even on a very slow drift. Plus it allows you to have a smoke, coldie or a pee without worrying about handlines.

Have a rod in the holder
Have a rod in the holder with a jig when drifting. I fishing with a handline aswell, don't know why i just love squidding with one.
And yeh i agree with Matt, as grabbing the squid behind the head controls them, and can point them away if they're going to blow!!
Cheers,
Sam
