South Africans!

Just a few questions for the South African members haha
Heading to South Africa in January and we are heading to Knysna to stay for a while.
I was wondering if there is any sort of sportsfishing scene there, be it fresh or saltwater? Or even game fishing...
Was hoping to take a couple sticks and chuck around some placcies and hards for some hard fighting sportsfish but would be happy to pay to do a charter and chase gamefish.
Tried googling but not a lot of info came up.
Any information would be great!
Cheers guys,

Good site that, look through it every now and again.
Schecky there are some nice Land Based Game fish... but you have to travel around a bit, there are rays to skates to the awesome raggies! and then the shad (tailor).

Sorry for the long reply, can't say it any shorter
When you get there go to the local tackle shop. They will sort you out if you spend some AUD, that’s a promise. You can buy some decent rods and reels there for a bargain if you buy with AUD. Also look early in the mornings where the locals go and fish. Follow them if you have to but don't stalk them, they carry guns. Some safety tips, Don't go venturing out on your own in an area where there is nobody around. You might just get harassed. Lots of bush dwellers around all over the coast line.
Knysna is a good area and if you drive somewhat north towards Jeffries Bay it gets even better. Nice deep water spots of the rocks will catch some nice fish. River mouths are good for Taylor, Mullaway and some shark species. Rocky areas - Black tail (Good fighter), Moonies etc. In the foamy areas Taylor. Deep water - mussel cracker (You catch them on fresh bait collected off the rocks. There are lots of fresh baits in SA and your rock baits kind of works well most of the time. Red bait is one that you get at low tide. Occy is good, use the suckers for black tail with a No. 2 hook. Meulies (Called Sardines in SA) are also good and they are very oily. Ger the red eye sardines, they are the best. And off coarse squid, their head quarters are in Jeffries Bay. Most of the worlds squid comes from there. I forgot to mention Bronze Bream, you get them in grassy arear and you have to use pink prawn for bait with them. They don't take on other baits. For rigs, the std paternoster will catch anything.
Good luck mate, wish I could go with you, we would have had a ball fishing. I will be going to Jeffries Bay some time soon for two weeks. Cant wait to go get some cracker fish. I know this area well and have never been disappointed when going down there.
All the best and remember to take some pictures of what ever you catch or don't catch. Knysna is one of the most beautiful coastlines and forrest areas in SA, even if you just bring some general pictures for the guys, they will appreciate them. Go check out the knysna elephants and the big tree

Game fish
Not the best area for big gamies, have to go really far out (50 - 80km) to get record tuna, and that is only when they are on the run. For game fish you need to head to the northern Natal coast line next to Mozambique. If you can make it there you won't be disappointed if you go out on a game fishing charter. The guys get them pelagics on the JetSki's over there. Its the truth. No jokes.
By the way, I can tell you this, if you should catch a mussle cracker of about 12 - 15 kg your trip would be rewarded mate. They are like locomotives, the power never waers out. They go slow but they go continuously.
And use mono line, Braid will not last on those rocks.

Artificials are plentyfull,
Artificials are plentyfull, not so sure about catching squid from the side though, but you're welcome to try. They call squid jigs Dollies over there. Not as fancy as the stuff we get here but they work and they catch heaps with them from the boats. I have never done squid fishing from the shore line down there. Never actually asked the locals about that either. We just got a squid or two from the boats when they came into the harbour and used it for bait. Enjoy.

closer to the time give me a shout, I grew up in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. good fishing in the right areas.
Tuna off Cape Point from Nov to late Jan. worth a charter, as the yellowfin tuna go to 100kg!
off Knysna, the fishing is also good, but great white country that side, so if you dive, you have to go to Hermanas to do a cage dive with the GW...worth the thrill.
not much fresh water fishing that side, but good rock fishing on the coastline, but get a license or you will be fined. you can get it at the local post office.
cheers

most of the bigger YFT are
most of the bigger YFT are taken on charter boats about 5miles to 20 miles south of the point, so you need to be on a 18foot or bigger boat!
of the shore line they spin metal slices from the rock cliffs ( called Rooikrans, means Red Cliffs) and they catch yellow tail ( same as yellow tail kingfish) and long fin tuna ( albacore) quite often, with a few YFT as well around december to jan off the cliffs.
Tuna fishery there is very good now and last 5 years have seen big catches and lots fo fish taken.
Back in 2004 me and three guys took 52 alabcore and about 12 YFT in three hours on a charter!
I'll get you a few names of good charter boats that are real guns at YFT and not badly priced.

Just loved Morgans bay and Knysna when a wee snapper
Been out off SA since I was 11, but fished like a fanatic as a child. Caught heaps of shad/elf (tailor) at Morgans and also some large kabilyou (dont know the correct spelling but its SA's Mullas) in the Estuary and morgan's Beach.
Also recall having a ball on juvie Snapper-like fish in Knysna and Morgans and had a hoot. Also caught a "huge" Occy on hook that got dragged up and then almost filled the tinny with a water spray. The oldies was delighted because that was enough bait for almost the entire holidays. Im never scared of the feeling of suckers, but this was about 6ft across and how we manhandled that back to base with 3 10yo on board still make me laugh. One driving and 2 fighting vs 8 arms and a large beak with all sorts of screams would have been very comical.
Have fun Schecky and if you are going to the Strand area pm me and I will put you in touch with my cousens that are fanatic Mulla fishers, wading out to Poles placed there in the middle of the bloody cold sea to fish for these is more fanatic than me!!!!!

Hi there - seeing that it is
Hi there - seeing that it is January month - you would most probably fish from the beaches as that is where the action is. Check out the Map of Knysna area of Google - all the names of areas is in close prox of Knysna.
Knysna Lagoon - some nice size grunters; 2 - 3kg; if you are lucky Leeries / Garrick. A 5kg Garrick can give you a good workout. Bait - prawn, sardines, shad (tailor) or chokka (squid) and artificials. Best time of catching the action - early morning to late afternoon, sunset. You can fish from the mouth - at the heads, and along the lagoon area / Thesen Island. Best is to see from the local knysna marina if someone is willing to take an extra hand on deck - you would most probably find that the blokes will take you up, wanting to show you the area.
Brenton On Sea - some good rough surf conditions. Once again - look for the holes. You will be able to catch Shad (tailor), Garrick, Cob, Dassies, Karanteen, Blow fish and plenty sharks - especially from 3pm onwards. Sharks would be Smoothhounds, SandSharks, Lesser / Guitar Sharks, Bronze Whalers, Ragged Tooth, Bull and plenty of flat fish - rays ect. Use same bait as above - if going for sharks - slide fish heads out with plenty of fish gut tied around the head.
Buffels Bay - if you want to try the all amazing catch of a Mussel cracker - try Buffels Bay. Drive to the end of the road as you enter Buffels Bay untill you reach the Caravan Park. Park, walk in and head towards the rocks on your right hand side. Get spot on rocks (be carefull - water rough) and use either crab / smashed black mussel with chokka as bait. Use a size 6 hook (Diachi) or soemthing similiar that is strong.
Robbeberg Nature Reserve - if you are to walking - then this would probably be your highlight of your trip. Beautiful, with the best fishing I have ever experianced. Use big tackle, heavy giant abrasive lines and get ready for big Garricks, shad (tailor) and sharks. Use baits as above.
Sedgefield (Gericke se Punt) - this is a another do and die venture. Fish on this spot only on low tide. The rewards - wonderfull. Musselcracker, shad, garrick, karanteen, cob and plenty sharks. Use the same bait as above and try artificials for the tailor / garrick. I got hooked into plenty big ones on this spot. Fished here Feb'10 - was great - will try upload a photo or 2 to show and bait proposals.
I will fish here in Dec'10 / 11 for 2 weeks - enjoy man!

@Crasny1 - the pole off the Strand (Melk Bay) is called Sharks Ally. Wade in about 60m onto rock with pole - hold on and fish - and DO NOT hook the fish onto your rod bucket - it is not called Sharks Ally for nothing! Ha ha
We normally wade out 120m onto the fron reefs and catch "mullies" and Geelbek / Tailor. Good fun.
Cheers
