Went out for a last fish before the ban yesterday. I was mostly interested in learning to drive the EVO3. We found quite some good fish shows but the bite was quiet most of the day. Ended up with a good pinky, small dhu a small grey band and a few large skippy. So the lads were happy.
I took this shot west of Rottnest. Anybody know what this could be. I'm thinking bait fish because we didn't get a bite..
Left is P66 at 50hz
Right is totalscan at 83hz chirp

I was chasing similar off
I was chasing similar off Dunsborough on Sat with the whole screen filling up left to right at one stage. Eventually gave up on it as bait schools or disinterested snapper.

We got the 650mm Pinky first
We got the 650mm Pinky first drop at 6:30 just after high tide on a similar picture in 40m. Then another double strike straight after which ended in a tangle and lost fish. Seems like when there is a high tide at first light, the pinkies go nuts. Ryan Tithorpe mentioned this at is pinky seminar.
I managed later to send a 250Gm knife jig straight into the school and it was smashed on the first retrieve. It must have been a big Sambo because it peeled line off a 50Lb braid outfit in 3 big runs before busting off. This was a first for me actually seeing the jig hit the school on the sounder and it was really cool. I can see it becoming adictive. Now to just sort out getting the same pictures when moving at speed....
I feel some through hull transducers on the close horizon. Very close to pulling the trigger on a complete Raymarine Axiom Pro Package with all through hull.

Total Scan Transducer
Sounds like I'm not alone with getting the totalscan to read at speed. Do you find the P66 gets a better read while underway Gruntre? Was going to add a screen shot in the reply but unsure on how to do this.

I have had a few similar
soundings lately. they turned out to be small snapper from 70mm long along the wall in the sound, to 150mm near Carnac sunday. hope the grow quick.
each season the pinkie seasons get better and better. Good on the fisheries for introducing the dimersal ban to allow the breeding to happen without too much human pressure.

Same soundings same depth
Same soundings same depth and deeper too and not that far from where you must have been (all the way down to 300m) were swallowtails. They were Thick as everywhere and couldn’t get past them for a decent deep drop....
Normally don’t mind them but when chasing deep drop fish the swallow tails were giving me the shits and eating all my deep drop baits!!
i have an nss evo2, TM transducers annoyed the shit out of me with prop wash and air coming off the strakes giving me churned up water at speed. Picture was rooted over 15kts
Went to a wet box 600w and the picture was instantly awesome by comparison, last year upgraded to wetbox 1KW and picture improved even more.
Transome mount just simply don’t suit some hulls and motor placements etc, equally wetbox and wet faced isn’t for all hulls either....
im more than happy with what I have nowadays. Suits my deep dropping off Exmouth too which is really deep compared to what I do down here in perth.

..
If swallowtails were eating my deep drop baits I wouldn't be winding them up, they are great DD bait live.

Im happy to read the above
Im happy to read the above Chris, ive fitted P66 transducers to both my previous and current boat, but for the love of me cannot get anything half decent at speed from the current old Gaurdian hull....tried two positions with height variations from nothing to 10mm below hull but still shit house to no reading at all when at speed.
Was starting to wounder if theres a setting i have wrong for it to be so bad ??.

Could be settings mate, you
Could be settings mate, you do need to get that bit correct too, but I’ve found it’s a lot to do with placement...
Another fishwrecked member helped me tune my sounder to suit when I had it transom mounted, it was better than I could do, especially when at speed, but I still wasn’t happy with it.
Chalk and cheese from transom mount to wetbox for me.
Wetbox for me at least is a lot more forgiving in respect to having to retune when moving from slow speed/drifting to when I open up the throttle/speed.
my 600w wet box was just a P79 which ‘I think’ is just the wet box version of the P66 you have (I might be wrong)...I thought was an awesome little transducer and picture was awesome....and it was cheap as!

Good call Alan, will try next time...didn’t think of it at the time to use as a live bait. I did knock off a fillet or two as bait but not livey

gruntre69 - Pics to me look
gruntre69 - Pics to me look like bait schools. Can't see any bigger fish of interest there. Given the lack of structure on the bottom I wouldn't normally drop on this ... or at best would be a quick drop and move on if no bites. My sounder presents differently, so hard for me to interpret your bottom reading exactly, but doesn't look overly exciting. I normally like to see a little structure around ... even in the 80+ meter mark.
JackFrost - I would normally drop on your sounder pic. Hard to tell as again your sounder is different to mine, but worth a drop as could be larger fish ... again bottom structure to me for the water depth doesn't look great so I personally wouldn't spend much time here (only 1 or 2 drops max). unless there is some decent structure off screen that I couldn't see?
Cheers

Yeah thanks Snuffs, it was
Yeah thanks Snuffs, it was the gravel patches just of Quindalup. My cousin who was in his boat said he normally pulls snapper out of the area but more when the school makes an upward arch shape as he says that's when they are feeding.
I went and bought myself a $50 Go Pro Hero2 on Friday and plan to rig it up and start dropping it down during the ban to really get my head around what I'm seeing on the sounder screen.
