Been a shit house weekend, just hope the boat is a starter motor and nothing more serious and that the dog hasnt broken anything, sigh.

oh oh..hence the comment on the salmon thread!!

youve got a 115 Yam havent you? Have you ever tried to start it with a rope? Me and a mate tried it in the back yard for a laugh-I wish it had lower compression!

Long Island-aka Serruria Isl?

Ive always wanted to camp on there, steam past it all the time at work.

yeah Chris Im not even going

Mon, 2012-04-09 18:13

yeah Chris Im not even going to go there by sayin that!

But as Adams shows above NOTHING mechanical is foolproof, and I dont reckon they get any more reliable than a 115 4S yam.

Was wondering if it might have been Crasny having fixed the trailer!

Towed in

Mon, 2012-04-09 18:17

Towed a boat in on Saturday night that had run out of fuel half way back from Koks island. He'd topped it up with 125 litres the afternoon before heading out and instaed of parking it up where he usually does out of town he left it in front of the units he stopped at.

One engine started coughing when the just passed the island so they shut it down thinking it was dirty fuel because the fuel bowl was full of crap then the othe one died some 5nm towards town. A passing boat hooked them on and started towing but had to call us out because they would have run out as well.

Beautiful night for it, full moon and light winds, getting in around 2000 hrs.

They estimated that someone had sucked about 300 litres out , and to make it worse, they got bugger all fish to show for it.

6 hours!

Mon, 2012-04-09 20:49

thats incredible, theres probably more commercial vessels here than nearly anywhere else and thats only a couple of miles from where we are sitting.

Did he have a 406?

Epirb/commercial vessels

Mon, 2012-04-09 22:53

Rob,

Even a 406 mhz epirb can take 5 hours + for a satellite to pass and receive the signal and bounce it to RCC Canberra, then they start organising a response.  They send a boat or a plane out to your location and the 121.5 side of the epirb shows up on their 10cm radar as a line of dots turning into circles as they approach your position, they still dont know where you are, thus why signalling devices are so important.

Even a 406mhz with GPS still can take that 5 hours + for a satellite to pass over and detect the signal, but at least they know your lat and long immediately.

Commercial vessels unless they see they boat turn over or signalling devices, pretty much dont enter the picture unless asked by local Police, VMSR etc to keep an eye out. Being a ski boat and with a low profile wouldnt have helped either.

Sounds like a bummer of a situation with the boat turned over, radio out of operation and flares unable to be accessed.

yeah for sure, but given that

Mon, 2012-04-09 23:09

yeah for sure, but given that its almost next to the boat ramp, maybe a mile or 2 on an easter weekend, you wouldnt expect to be floating in the water for 6 hours.

We've been watching the procession of boats going out and coming back and forth even on the breezy days.

Had my fair share this weekend....

Mon, 2012-04-09 21:28

Finally got the boat out over easter.  Been doing some work on the trailer over the last couple of months and left it to the old man to take it off the jacks and tighten the wheel nuts (dual axle trailer with 2 tonnes of boat).  Been so long since we did the work that I forgot to check the wheel nuts.  Unfortunately, so did my old man.  Lost a wheel and spent 3 hrs by the side of the road sorting it out, including a trip trip to Repco for some new wheel nuts.  Luckily I noticed it about to come off and and was pulling up to stop when it did.  Could have been much worse!!  Was metro, so not far to home or Repco.  Then had an indicator stop working today.  Popped the cover off, and the globe and copper retainer disintegrated in my fingers.  New set of LED's coming up!

But, on the plus side, some great boating weather and the kids had a ball.......
