Snapper in the Sound? Is it worth a go?

Howdy all,

Well I have booked a couple of day off to spend with Mrs Swompa, and had a look at Seabreeze and saw that Monday night looks OK for a fish in the sound.

Question is, would it be worthwhile making a trip into the sound for an evening fish?

I note that it is the first day of the new moon, and we will have an incoming tide, I am just unsure what that equates to fishing wise.

I also know that if im not out there I wont catch anything, but as I am the kiss of death with it comes to fishing in general, is it worth a go?

Definatley not.

There is nothing in Cockburn Sound, its a large deserted expanse of heavily poluted water rendering all fish life non-edible, heavily mutated and simply non existant.

Unfortunately the internet doesn’t portray the difference between sarcasm and honesty too well, well without pictures atleast.

Youre right the internet doesnt, but i figured the words would.

Its always worth a look imo, find some structure, get a burley trail going and see what happens.

I think what Albee is trying to say is he has caught them all and there are none left, true story!
Albee is the snapper master listen to everything he has to say, I have the last couple years and it has paid off.

it's always worth a shot especially on the new moon for snapper with incoming tide during the night. if you know your spots it should produce! even good to get out there for a flick to kill some time nothing beats it!

Start at the D9

Tue, 2013-02-05 15:21

I would get set up on the D9 just befoure dark and start to burley. Lots of other species might turn up in your trail too. Give it a good go for a couple hours and if nothing happens then start sounding from the D9 towards the channell maker north of there.

Zig zag up and down that conture line , 10m to 13m depths . If you see some schooling fish float down some baits, you should be able to get all the fresh yellow tail etc while you are on the D9 .

Hope this helps , Grant .

If you're nearly as good as me you should "bag out" on grunter & butter fish. It will keep you busy if nothing else.

As you said already, you wont catch anything if you're not out there.

If you manage to unlock the code, let me in would ya, I've been trying for 6 yrs now & still not managed that elusive pinky.

Cheers

Hey swompa have a look at this: http://www.tides4fishing.com/au/western-australia/rottnest-island

someone put that link up recently and it can help you understand what effect the moon and tides have on the fish....

Grant gives good advice too..... there is some good areas along the bank... D9 does get hammered but you can catch your liveys there and move arround afterwards..

Good luck..

 Well we went out. Started

Mon, 2013-02-11 22:25

Well we went out. Started trying for squid near the cliffs just south of the woodmans point marina at 1730 then come 1800. We headed out to "gravel patch" or whatever it is, about 1.5 to 2 miles west south west of the Alcoa jetty. Anchored in the 13m line with lots of fish about.

had three lines out with squid and scalies on, and sent heaps of berley in.

First hook up was a little shark ray just before sunset, then around 1930 had a hook up and run with a 70-100cm bronzie.

As we were trying to contain the dog, and figure out how to get it on board, it went through the line. We hung around for another 30 minutes then headed Bach towards the ramp and drifted in 11m of water but didn't get a nibble.

i sent a Gopro down when we first got there and it was a silty bottom with lots of yellow tail. The GPS software on my iPad wasn't connecting so we had to navigate by sight which was challenging but oh we'll.

So, once again, kiss of death when it comes to fishing, but another day of annual leave tomorrow to make me forget about it.

It took me quite a few trips out there to get onto the snapper , don't forget there are other nice fish to chase depending on the seasons.

Cheers mate.

The evening was a picnic with the wife in Cockburn sound, with fishing rods in so a few drinks and a roast chook were thrown back, and any fish will have been a bonus.

My learning from the evening was to not rely on Plan2nav (Cmap) on the IPad.
