snapper

 evening fellas

looking too spend some time chasing LB pinkies while im on break from rock groins..which i have never attempted before have spent a bit of time scouring all the different threads about lb snapper fishing

need some clarification on a couple issues:

from what i can gather a rising tide is quite important as is moon phase (is this correct): one of the days im trying to lock in has a incoming tide from 5pm high tide not till 1130pm and its a new moon

Also what rig would be beneficial: a standard paternoster with lead too secure it to the bottom or would it be better drifting it down the water column and recasting as required or 2 snelled hooks on a leader swivel in between with a running sinker.

from what i can gather berley is essential ...??? i take it fresh squid will suffice for bait .. or even some rock crabs if i can get them..(what size ??)

and what style of hooks : standard or circle

will be running gear wise: 11ft ish  beach rod with a Penn 950ssm loaded up with 25lb platypus pre-test

what lb leader would you recomend ::

any info would be greatly appreciated guys i know there is alot of questions

hey mate, when targeting

hey mate, when targeting snapper i use a 60lb leader not for the breaking strain for for the abrasion on the rocks, also i use 2 snelled hooks on a running sinker, found they dnt like weight soon as they feel weight they could drop the bait...

Try a few options

In coming tide or out going atleast the tide is moving. Morning or sunset no personal perference. Bait anything fresh i.e. whiting, scalies, squid or if no other option mulies mullet frozen squid. Rigs I'd start with a running sinker with snelled 5/0 or 6/0 gama hooks leader no less than 40pd but would start with 60pd because you've already have 25 pd main line.   Good Luck keep a record of tides, time and moon cycle for future info.

Fishing the change of light will improve your chances. Its always the first factor I take into consideration when targeting pinks

 Definitely a running sinker

Definitely a running sinker I'd suggest the lightest sinker possible my best fish was caught on unweighted hook.. I personally wouldn't go the circles but it depends on the bait ur using- i like mulies as bait and would use bait keepers for them. If you know what structure is around you can adjust your leader accordingly if in doubt use heavy stuff as suggested

Same as

Mon, 2012-08-13 14:43

above, i use the larger star sinkers running of the main line when fishing off the rock walls.

Good beach rod, big cast and leave it, check at intervals for pickers, scalies and yellow tails are longer lasting.

Drag set and in the event of a run bring it dont play em, they will take you in the rocks.

Cubed mulies or chunks of fish along with fish oil will be enough to get a trail drifting through the water columns

If i were you i would be

If i were you i would be using the freshest bait possible! fresh whiting is best IMO, i would concentrate on using baits that keep pickers away. Try fillets of herring, whole yellow tail, scalies and even fillets of mullet. I use snelled hooks, reason being when you rig up the bait you can have two facing opposite directions giving you a better chance of hook up.

Good hook exposure, fresh bait and you will be well on your way. i always go 60 pound leader due to rock abrasion and also you would be surprised about the bigger sized snapper they can quiet easily break through anything lighter..

Running sinker as they don't like weight and also go light as possible just enough to hold the bottom. When fishing for snapper there are certain things that trigger there feeding so if you line a few up your in with a good chance. Like beau said one of the main ones is change of light although people catch them during the day and middle of the night you will find its to do with another trigger like tide change..

i hope some of this helps?
