Slide baiting reels

gday fellas

with tax time coming up I'm looking into getting a slide bait setup to target sharks mullas etc... I'm pretty clued up about rods but I have no idea about Reels and reel/spoil sizes and the best way to spool them with the lengths of brain vs mono and what breaking strain and diameter. Also I've never learned to cast and overhead reel so that's something to take into account too

Cost isn't really an issue here so any and all suggestions are welcome

my pick at no1 is a trinidad

my pick at no1 is a trinidad 30dc. The "digital cast" makes it very easy to cast. Especially for a beginner. Another reel is a Avet lx mc raptor. Both these reels are top end and the trinidad is no longer made so is tough to source. Otherwise u move down to a normal trinidad. Then at the lower end is a torium, penn fathom, daiwa bg. I personally have a penn fathom and think its an awesome reel for the price. But not in the same league as my trinidad dc.

 As you're starting out I'd

As you're starting out I'd personally go with a lower end reel. A few models that dont break the bank and cast very well are the shimano toriums, daiwa saltists & BGs, fin nor lethals, Penn fathoms.

Ideally you want at least 3-500m of braid (generally 50lb) and then about 150-300m of 0.55-0.60mm (45-50lb) mono top shot. I generally buy my mono in bulk spools which makes changing it often very cost effective, the braid doesn't see water too often and lasts a long time. I run a fin nor lethal 30h and have had Toriums and a saltist in the past. The lethal outcasts both imo.

You mentioned you've got an idea about rods so I'll just mention that personally I believe the faster the action on the rod (stiffer rod), the easier it is to slide with. I prefer low mount rods in the 14 foot range for this use.

I would say the most important aspect of sliding is the sinker. A top quality grapnel is a must, if the sinker doesn't hold there's no way you're getting a decent sized bait out. Obviously there are other factors contributing to the holding power of a sinker but cheap grapnels or other styles dont cut it IMO. I use the busted grapnels in 8oz for big baits up to around 1.5kg and haven't seen a sinker that holds better.

Second most important factor for me is using a weighted slide, especially off the beach. Makes getting the bait out so much easier and can often be the difference especially with dead baits. Livies off the stones are a different story and unweighted can be good there.

Plenty of info on the net about sliding, feel free to send me a pm if you'd like some more info.

Words of wisdom!

Hutch is like a walking encyclopaedia of fishing tackle.  Before each boating trip, we would spend about 3 hours talking about tackle and whats the best combos to bring etc..  lol
