A MAN is in hospital after his boat smashed into a jetty at JoJo's cafe in Nedlands this morning.
The 7.2m vessel collided with the jetty about 1.30am, causing extensive damage to the vessel and to the jetty.
The skipper of the boat was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment for chest injuries and a knock to the head.
Insp Steve Bradley said police divers were called in to make sure there were no other passengers on the vessel.
"The vessel has taken on water and is in danger of sinking," he said.
"It is not known at this time how or why the collision occured, and police and marine officers will investigate the matter."
absolute mess,
read on Perthnow today.
All this working keeps getting in the way of fishing!

Could be worse
I think he is very lucky, not only for himself but what if people had been on that jetty.
I see boats flogging around at night all the time and this is what i dread . Being hit by one of these "experienced" boaters.
Lucky it was a jetty and not a boat full of people .
PS. I hope there is a reason and not just operator error .

Funny how everone instantly
Funny how everone instantly jumps to conclusions without having a clue what accualy happened. Maybe throttle stuck on? who knows. We are very quick to condem everybody without just being grateful that the guy wasnt killed.

thats what kill switch's are
thats what kill switch's are for! and as for stuck throttle, well it's a 8knot limit, even if it stuck wide open you go around in circles not head into a jetty...
Stop defending a crash that was plainly caused by speed. Too many people in this state make excuses for others dam stupid actions!

anything is possible. there is a chance he was drunk or even fell asleep at the helm. either way it happened it has caused a load of damage. try explaining this one to the insurance company. depending on circumstances it may not even be covered if found recklesness

well looks like the Freo
well looks like the Freo Refueling vessel has gone and done even better by crashing into the Freo Railine bridge and lodging itself on the pylon.
Anyone see it this morning???

Im not saying it wasnt caused
Im not saying it wasnt caused by speed Tony as it likely was. But there are so many possibilities that could have happened to cause this accident. the poor guy could have had a heart attack and knocked the throttle when falling over or just knocked the throttle then fell backwards and couldnt get up in time. But you have obviously made up your mind and convicted this guy already so there you go.

sorry mate, I have strong
sorry mate, I have strong feeling on the very easy and simple test we do here to get our skippers license!
Too bloody easy to get that piece of plastic with 4m rubber duck test and then go and buy a 8m + 400hp / 40knot cruise missile to tear around with. Last week end watched a tool nearly put a 10m $600k boat into the marina wall and other boats at Ascot, cause he could not control it and had no idea how to dock his new toy!!!!
And to many people being called experienced sailors out there and they have not even got the basic idea of keeping to the right in the river ways. First Cardinal Rule!...
I hope for him it was a mechanical issue or something, but if I put my HSV V8 through a garden wall and into a house and left a trail of destruction behind me in a 50km/hr zone at night, what would you say??? give the hoon a benefit of the doubt, his brakes failed, his foot slipped, the throttle stuck??? Oh he fell asleep at the wheel and …… how many more excuses do we give people.
That boat did not just go from zero to well into the 20+ knots range in seconds, it was traveling well before the impact at some speed.
As for the truth, we will never know. hopefully some surveillance footage in the area will tell the story !

Tapout's sorta got a point
Tapout's sorta got a point there.
I'll relate an incident a good buddy of mine had, he's diabetic and hadn't been keeping an eye on his insulin levels while out in the tub and into a hot bite.
Anyway he's started feeling crook, got his needles and what not out but passed out in the process, driving his boat up onto a beach full of tourists. They've all rushed over, seen the needles and called the cops saying a junkie's just beached his boat...
Things aren't always what they seem.
I hope its just actions of a knobend and not something like a heart attack etc. That would be most unfortunate.
Not all who wander are lost...

If you lost control at speed
If you lost control at speed good chance the motor would turn away and the boat would just run in circles. Sad to say i'm with Tony and i'd put money on a not paying atten, speed and disorientation. If your disoriented for health reasons you should stop driving, or at least slow right down.
As you can see its a American boat as well. Thats possibly a good cause. Not designed to hit our jetties.

Surprised that nobody mentioned the possibility that the guy might have been pissed!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

The boat looks to me to be a
The boat looks to me to be a Maxum Cruiser and whether, cable or not will be a single V8. Ever driven one or let go of the steering on a big single V8. I'm not talking about letting go for seconds the conspiracy argument is that it could have been a heart attack so let go of the steering for a over 20 seconds and see were it ends up.
Even my boat with twins will wonder after a short stint of no hands action.
By the by its obvious IMHO what caused the accident..
This just goes back to my argument that there should be consequences to bad or incorrect behavior. Go break the law, perform what can only be seen as stupid and get your insurance to pay. SO in turn we all then pay in the long run. Go out and break the fishing laws and get a written warning only. SO eventually total bans mean we all have to pay. I'm just sick of paying for other people's in ability to do the right thing.

Is this the boat?
Just opened the web site to Jojo's cafe, theres a photo in the Aqua viva page and in it is a boat moored at the jetty that looks very similiar.
PS my boats cable, and I run hands off most of the time.

Let go of the wheel when
Let go of the wheel when driving you should use a Auto Pilot. That's what they are for.
Non Feed back is not for no hands driving. Oh and with hands of what happens when the bow drops into a trough? At speed? How many of you keep your hands of the wheel then..
I can take my hands of my car wheel as well and it drives straight, for a bit anyway. If i did and i hit another car should my insurance pay up?

would love to see the water
would love to see the water police report, remembering we have bugger all laws in WA to breath test a skipper, unless he is reckless! ( a little tweety bird says he was very much ........) can't reviel my source, but very reliable source!
Not like the east coast where you need to be under 0.05 to be at the helm of a boat! Time for WA to change it's laws and catch up me thinks////

I find it laughable how
I find it laughable how judgemental & quick you are to jump on others action, also whinge about what they will cost you. We're you not the poor guy who lost a boat & claimed insurance, got paid out from a questionable action of charging a batery in an enclosed space???? just my humble observations over the past 12 months mate.

one, get the facts mate,
one, get the facts mate, battery charger was on the back deck and not enclosed space, the charger overheated and set fire to the carpet. ( yes i have learned my lesson and will never again charge with a battery charger that is not on a concrete floor,
two, how many witnesses would you like to talk to that helped with the insurance claim and police report I had to do...??? Did you think they just wrote out a cheque without a full investigation and dam hard look at my actions???
three, And as for the boat vs jetty, I know some of the facts not in the public domain, so do some of the fishwrecked members here as well, so lets just say we will let the rule fo law take it way and hopefully tell you all the truth! ( unfortunately rules do not allow you to tell the truth on these websites quiet often, till the info is in the full public domain...)

Tony I wasn't for 1 second
Tony I wasn't for 1 second infering you had done something dodgy for an insurance calim. As for the facts well, I was just going by how I remembered them & what I had heard from "OTHERS" so yes may not have had them in the correct sequence or totally accurate, like what people are doing on this thread. I was simply poitning out to ERR is HUMAN & some more than others should understand this & show a little more compassion. As with others comments about car speeding, insurance etc well I guess they are all Saints & angels & have never done anything wrong. They must be the people that over take others doing around 105 kph @ 110Kph on the HWY leagally rather than speeding up that little bit more to 120 KPH to do it safely & consider the other road users behind them.
Anyway I'm going fishing, cause the weathers great & that's supposed to be what the sites about

No worries mate, I over
No worries mate, I over reacted.
But this is not comments about someone doing 45km/hr in a 40km/hr speed zone as an example, it about doing the equivalent to 200km/hr in a school zone!
YES fishing is great idea, but work has me by the neck till Sunday and the weather seems to want to ambush my plans as well

So Col_Striker just a simple
So Col_Striker just a simple question. If i go out and drive my car into a building or take out some one else's Car whilst speeding and breaking the law should my Insurance pay me out for my loss? If your answer is no then why would they pay me out on the water.
Commonsense whilst looking at the photo you can tell he was going faster than 8 knots and that is breaking the law.

All I can say is simple
Whatever the bloody cause the end point was "speed"!!
This boat was travelling at some speed to do that much damage to the boat and jetty. I cant see how this could be questioned in anyway. As a former Rally Australia safety officer my role was mechanism of accident investigation, ie how did it happen and what caused it, especially if someone was injured. It gives you a sense of the forces involved to cause certain damage. Now I am by no way an expert with Fglass but with metals I would say I have a fair idea, and the metal in the jetty is mangled to say the least, ie big force.
Whatever led to the creation of this "big force", ie whether he was just speeding, drugged, drunk etc I wont comment on, because that is not my or our role, but the role of the water/police and other authorities.
