we used hoki and before that
we used hoki and before that orange roughy, the orange roughy didn't stink as much as the others and still caught many crays. My grandad uses whiting heads and they catch.

Wobbies will eat anything
But up our way, their preference is definitely seas mullet and tailor. Herring don't catch any more wobbies than anything else, apart from the last two mentioned. I'd happily use herring all year, premium bait. Stuff like orange roughy heads and tuna heads are good holding bait, for after the crays have cleaned out their preferred food, but won't catch well if you have pots nearby baited with better stuff.

Still mourning the loss of Orange Roughy heads
Great oily bait, bones still brought the crays in and they didn't make the boat smell like an offal pit

Crays will eat anything,
Crays will eat anything, they are the junk feeders in the ocean...
As Ranmar has suggested anything oily will be premium but serously you can use anything that was living, in actual fact you can use live bait....
Cat works well...
Rabbits, Rays, shark heads, roo tail, roo palms, tuna heads, kuta, roughy, carp, bony bream, Abalone, khawai etc etc etc etc
People will try an wank on to you about this catches better than that but the most important factor is you have to have your pots where they are going not where they been....

Abalone are the ultimate bait
At least up here. I also seem to recall they are as illegal as they are effective....
