hey guys, im currently in the process of setting up a new beach combo and im looking for a good reel to suite a 9 foot rod. I was thinking about the shimano spheros 6000 which is around $200, does anyone have any advice? is this a good reel? i will be using this combo for beach fishing, fishing from jettys for tailor, salmon, shark etc.
are there any other good reels around $200 that i should look into? any advice will be great.
cheers.

yer the sharks would just be
yer the sharks would just be small port jacksons, small bronze whalers etc.
as for line, i was thinking around 10-13kg, nothing too much as i still want to have a long casting range, and i was thinking about mono, but not too sure?

maybe a lil spool capacity
maybe a lil spool capacity for shark, but spheros are bloody awesome reels. I just dont have much to complain about with them. I have one myself and i think their great. Done everythin with them. Sharking, jigging, bottom bounced and even light trolling round rotto, G.I. and such. Been hammered and still goin without goin through a service yet. Also there's alot of aftermarket components that will go into spheros so beefing them up has a fair few options.

oh and forgot to mention
oh and forgot to mention mine is the bigger one though. I use it on my 9ft 60lb stick. But yea the 60 size would suit yours 9ft perfect for heavy flicking. Stick an aftermarket gold knob on it and its smexy!
But in saying that, i gotta say it would suit jetties and rocks more than beach. I would go something bigger in rod for beach.
Graphite 10-12ft at least and run a nice surf cast reel for distance. Like the daiwa emblem or the daiwa emcast. Both reels only a lil over 200.
Then if you want something thats abit more tougher than we got the daiwa opus bull and daiwa sealine bull. All of which has a large spool made for casting off the beach. If the distance isnt too much worry, than yea, spheros is a bloody good real with some guts. Aside from those, theres also the banax dx series. Good, smooth drag, not much to look at, but a hearty reel. Also, the fin nor offshore is an absoloute tank lol, also not much past the 200 mark. The spinfishers are good all round as well.
60 size reels arent catered for that much, well not as much as the really big or really small lol. Makes it a lil hard to choose, especially if money is a factor. Around 200 for 60size... Spinfisher and few other penns, spheros, banax DX, some pfluegers... Cant think of much off the top atm. But yea, gives you an idea. Our site sponsers should both have stock of these.
If spheros is still tuggin at your shirt, BUY it, they're great reels for everything.

thanks for that! i currently
thanks for that! i currently have 2 penn 560 slammers, and there great reels im quite happy with them but now i want to try something different, ive never used a 'proper' shimano reel, i have heard there quite good so i am curious and i want to upgrade a bit.
as for the beach, im choosing to purchase a 9ft as when i do go to the beach, its only for salmon and i dont have to cast very far for them, i usually head down to yanchep lagoon and fish from the edge of the reef and once again, you dont have to cast very far from there, so for me a 10-12 foot is quite pointless.
what line do you reckon i should go for, mono or braid?

mate of mine caught a 25kg
mate of mine caught a 25kg yft on his while trolling , and many use them for sambo's so they can take punishment.
would have thought mono from beaches.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

i use braid. Its really
i use braid. Its really personal preferance. Braid for casting distance, line capacity and it has a better ability to cut through water and wind, like if it was to resist a bit of shore dump or if you were gonna use it while a lil windy or planning to put in rod holder. And it being more sensitive to bites and nibbles. You will see, feel, notice bites earlier because theres no stretch
Mono for abrasion resistance abilities and to aid in setting the hook on its own. Braid you usually have to strike pretty good to set it as mono stretches and pulls back. Not only that, if there is a bit of swell, the mono stretches as the swell tugs on your line instead of instantly moving your sinker or bait. So theres a bit of give within your length of line in the water before any shock reaches the rig.

ive got a 1400 on my 12ft beachey and love it heaps of line capacity catches everything and i think flash enough for the beach, and go the mono good for the reefs.
