Shark shit.

Was just watching Ifish with Paul Worstling catching massive snapper when they spawn in South Oz. This made me think how good we used to have it with our sambos on the barges west of Rotto. How come there pinky schools aren't plagued by sharks like our sambo schools? Is this more evidence that we need pro shark fisherman locally?

They've already started
They've already started munching the pinkies this season, great whites.

Think macca is referring to South Australia
And why they don't have a shark issue with their snapper schools.
personally wouldn't take Ifish as gospel to whats really happening. We do have some south oz members to confirm wether they have the same issue?

That's my point exactly, they
That's my point exactly, they were smashing heaps of big snaps and on some fairly light gear too. No sharks. Over here, different story.

Comparison!
Is the shark/snapper problem in Cockburn Sound anywhere near the shark/sambo problem at the barges? I have virtually no firsthand experience but from what I've read on here the barges are close to unfishable while the Sound is still worth a go.

Lost one at Busselton
I lost one Snapper last winter to a shark, approx 2km from the end of Busselton Jetty, just brought in a head after a short fight. It would have been over 600mm, not sure what shark took it.
Lifes a game but fishing is serious !!!

getting sharked catching
getting sharked catching snapper here in SA is not that uncommon, that said it seems to be mostly big whites doing this so often you're okay if they're not in the area, From what I gather the problem with the Sambos at the barges is with whalers?? (am I correct), sounds like they have learnt to hang around for an easy meal.

All the sharks we have landed
All the sharks we have landed at the barges have been whalers up to about 3m long on 24kg stand up but have also been dusted on 37kg with out any chance of landing them. So whites and big tigers also im guessing.
It started off with the odd sambo being sharked too every sambo being sharked too now the sharks taking your jig before the sambos.
Will the snapper fishing in South Oz be ruined by sharks eventually or do they have better shark fishing management than WA? Would be good for tourism and local fish stocks to get the sambo fishing back to where it was. My guess is this year the shallower aggs/schools will be plagued by sharks.

Probably not, we don't appear
Probably not, we don't appear to have the same numbers of whalers as far as it would be rare to see more than one shark in the one location rather than several as you guys cop it - probably has happened at times but not a usual occurrence.
90% of our whalers are bronzies...
occasionally get two whites on a spot though.....

Feel for you all....
Just back from 5 weeks fishing off Ningaloo Reefs and wasn't uncommon to loose 2/3 good fish to sharks. Seems like the bastards were waiting to ambush the better fish.
After this trip I will be seeking to invest in the lead minng industry to get some of my money back.
