Hey guys,
a few monthes back i caught my first large shark, and without much thought killed it with idea of eating it... after a couple of terrible meals im wondering if i could use it as bait?? or would its scent scare of certain species??
i basically have a whole bin of the stuff
cheers

used to use reef shark
used to use reef shark fillet as bait all the time here in the NT, make sure you take the skin off though as its a bugger to get off your hooks and the meat is real hardy stuff

Just wondering
"a few monthes back i caught my first large shark, and without much thought killed it with idea of eating it" Ok ya caught a large shark, got no problem with ya catching and keeping. Does pose a few questions though. How big was it? As the larger a shark is the worse eating it is from my understanding. Size limit (correct me if I'm wrong) 700mm between dorsal fins. What did ya do with shark once ya caught and killed it? Finned tailed and bleed properly? How ya bag and freeze it also makes a difference to eating quality.
As for useing it for bait, not sure about putting it on a hook, to catch what? If it works for cray bait all good gets recycled. JMHO

generally shark bait catches
generally shark bait catches sharks. demersals don't like it unless they are really biting. pelagics wont touch it. any other bait will be better.
as above though can't see why crays wouldn't eat it ....they eat anything.

In the Pilbara
used sharks for bait. Was the unfortunate buggers that couldnt be revived for one reason or another. Normally cut sharks off boatside but over the years have caught a few little reefies that just wouldnt "go" back. Probably due to light gear and a long battle.
Used them as bait and couldnt see any issues up there. Totally agree dont leave skin on, you need a hacksaw to get that off and the meat is pretty tough on the hook.
I mostly use arti's fishing, but the Deckie is a bait fisher and certainly got her fair share of mixed bags, including Red Emp, Coral trout, Chinaman, and especially garbage guts Estuary Cod on shark. But compared with Squid and mulies not a bar on them.

Green eyes as super deep bait
Whole fillet, leave skin on, if you have to cut the bait off the hook after a drop to change it so be it. You can almost guarantee you are not going to loose your bait to pickers in the deep so that's a plus. If you are targeting nannies or non cod like species (smaller mouthed) this will not apply.
Using green eyes as bait will also reduce the numbers of the @#$%^s so that is also a positive.
