Shark Bay Cockles / Pipis

Hi folks,

Might be a silly question and apologies if it is - but I’m in shark bay for a week with the fam (not a fishing trip) and  the 2 1/2 year old found a whole bunch of good size, empty cockle (pipi?) shells on the beach right in Denham. So im curious. Is there a good feed of cockles to be had here? Does anyone know if getting a few good cockles in shark bay is common ?

im also trying to find out if blue rings are a risk here as the little one loves walking the shallows and investigating everything. So while I’m asking the locals if anyone has an opinion, then happy to hear it !

Thanks !

Mick

There sure are and if you are going to find them it's right in the places your young one is exploring, they also like to hang out in empty shells and mussels.

I know there was heaps of them just to the right of the monkey Mia jetty when I was there a few months ago. Kids filled a bucket in no time.

Cockles seem to be pretty widespread up there.  We collected some on the beaches of the Peron Peninsula for bait and also ate some.  Being inexperienced, we didnt purge them and consequently they were very gritty.

I am not sure about blue rings, but beware of stonefish.

Cheers for the info. We had a little look today but didn’t find any. The wind up here at the moment doesn’t help haha but I’ll look harder now.

Geez the blue rings scare me more than sharks these days. Just need to be extra careful with the young one.
