Fri, 2018-10-26 21:12

Someone I know went to . many topics 2 most concerning was what I posted. Barratraumu also big topic.(mortality rate) Most people know dhue breeding happens after snapper . Current ban doesn't protect dhues only pinks . Hence extension to ban. Let's see. Being honest.

I think ban should be extended to cover dhuie breeding.

Still plenty of months and other fish to target.

Fuck that , if they do extend the ban then at least let each angler take a dhuie each. I only managed to get out 3 or 4 times this year due to a few different scenarios .Now that I'm healthy the weather is good I've got to wait another 2 fricken months.

This thread has all the hall marks of a chinese wisper

Sat, 2018-10-27 16:52

This is looking like some one is playing games and spreading a Chinese whisper to see who and what will rise to the bait.

Name the body that had the meeting and just what resolutions were passed at the meeting.

If who ever is looking at changing season dates for the west coast region then here is a few to consider,
crab season swan, Canning rivers and Mandurah/Murray estuary systems.
Start of season 1 Jan to end August,
give the crabs a chance to grow to a decent size and increase min size to 130mm.

Warnbro Cockburn sound snapper closed season, 1 September through to 30 October breading stocks not hammered when they school up for breading.

Dermersal ban excluding snapper bans for the sounds, 1 Sep through to 30 November, increase protection to demerersal breeding season stock.

Just my views on a few things and I'm sure others will have good arguments against such views which will be respected,
might not be agreed with but listened to and respected.

I like ya thinking on the early start n finish on bans as they get a chance to spawn and the amateur who can't get out deep also gets a chance to catch.

 Extended ban I think

Sat, 2018-10-27 17:30

Extended ban I think Johnnie

Dhuies breed at different times along the coast. Not 100% certain but I think water temp is a major determining factor. My understanding is that whilst spawning periods for Dhufish was a consideration, it was more about removing two months of fishing pressure off the demersal species.

I stopped donating frames and supplying Dhufish spawning aggregations information years ago, as I suspected I was aiding the Fisheries to build a case to impose restrictions. They started turning up to our weigh in collecting data and using our figures as a representive sample of the general public.

Whilst I know I will get shot down but please, everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine and I  have said this before, Dhufish population is in decline. Large numbers of undersized dhufish and the reduced number of large breeders (10kg) can be found but that is one first signs of specie decline. The egg to sperm ratio of a Dhufish 2 eggs to every 1 sperm.

I do find it surprising when people get onto public sites like this and say the caught and released lots of Dhuies. It just builds the Fisheries case. Considering the relatively unproven data of around 50% on released larger Dhufish moratality. Smaller Dhuies seem to be a little more resilient to catch and release.

Totally agree with earlier Snapper closure after seeing slaughter of them again this year.

Bang on

Sat, 2018-10-27 20:18

Gunner. I donate nothing now. All get recycled ( cray bait). Many years ago I use to hand in frames and tags , crays/ pinks even a dolly which was tagged at top end . Think your doing right thing. Maybe not. Dhues die ( most off them) release led crap idea. When I see fish coming up if it's a dhue i don't want ,I stop and put in rod holder. 3 to 4 mins later bang rod starts kicking again. Deco fish ( like divers do). Works every time in 20 to 75 meters. They hit water bang there gone ,strong as. Big dhues local hard to find. Yet go 2 to 3 hrs away heaps. Snapper ban is 1 thing that has worked brilliant. ( locally) There everywhere now days. Interesting times ahead .

Sat, 2018-11-24 19:31

We also do the deco stop on a dhu if its unwanted, or we have our bag already, especially jigging

im with Johnny, survival rate drastically increases, and none need a release weight.

There is a lot of trauma

Sun, 2018-11-25 06:33

There is a lot of trauma involved when fishing deep, deco stops might help some fish but once you go deep to the point of extended stomachs etc there will be moralities. Baldchin have dismal release rates even relatively shallow.

I saw one guy boasting on face book how had such a great overnighter out from mindarie releasing pinky's in 40m of water, that is just so wrong and only one example now why we may end up paying the price in reduced quotas for baratrauma allocation. There needs to be better education of people fish for sport fish shallow <15m.

Personally I rarely go out to direction bank it is such a long way to go for one drop to bag out on dhu, once we get ours we stop fishing and the rule is first legal demersals stay on board so the possibility is we only get 4 small fish between us. In the same amount of time taking into travel I can usually find some big dhu in less than 15 of water more often than not less than 10 and they release so strong if we get any extra while trying to top up with pinky or black arse.

Never had drama in any depth. If you think it's small take your time. Slow and steady. Once you can see what it is. Stop and wait if you don't want it. Deep drop ( cod ect) (there f@@ked)

SPOT ON!!

Mon, 2018-11-26 18:40

You're spot on with this Little Johnny - we've been doing it for years and it does seem to work.

They invariably swim off strongly, judging by the buckling rod, etc.

Not sure if that's a strong indicator of subsequent survival rates, but, seems a reasonable assumption they go on to survive?

Sun, 2018-11-25 18:13

I've been fishing in the sound for about 10 years and in the past 2 years I have personally seen snapper doing there spawning thing about ten times in broad daylight, this weekend just gone I almost ran over a spawning school doing there thing so as for increasing the the ban any earlier IMO is crap. Thing is when someone puts up a picture of 100 boats at the D9 its assumed that all of those boats are smashing it and cleaning up. Anybody who fishes the sound knows there are alot more schools and places to fish than the D9 if the D9 is really important to the spawing schools make it out of bounds to fish but increasing the ban is not the go. The current system seems to be working well in terms of pink snapper why does it need to change?

Mon, 2018-11-26 15:23

I dont agree with an extended blanket demersal ban.
There are a million people in about 100km of coastline, having the same restrictions for 700km to the north where there is lucky to be 1/10th of the population.

And a 1/10th of the ramp density.

Why?

There are a few other measures that should be introduced first to protect them such as rationalising bag limits across groups.

As a minimum, dhuie bag limit same as coral trout-1 per person per day.

Rethink the baldie size limits again in a rational way.

 What about the "shark"

Mon, 2018-11-26 17:14

What about the "shark" netters down south bringing a couple of hundred spawning dhueys in to Bunbury from around Yallingup every day as "bycatch"?
