river monsters

Seeing as the mulloway keep dissappointing me ive turned my targets to the swan bullies on the yak. Last week saw me drop one yak side i estimated at over 1m, this week my cousin sam joined me (sammy the salmon) and he had almost instant success with 3runs in twenty minutes and finally hooking up the third time. After a tense 10min battle on mono leader and having to beach the yaks to land it we had a 1.53m stinky bull shark on shore complete with remora. Pretty big shark for a heavily populated ski area. There are plenty more out there too

I wish this wasnt something that went back, end up with water ways like the eastern states..full of them.

Our beaches need shark nets, river will be next.

Thats a fair call, and i agree but what the hell were we gonna do with 40+kg of smelly arse bull shark certainly wasnt gonna slap it on the yak and paddle back with it. I guess with that many skiers in the water every weekend something woulda happend by now until it does il release them.

Its a sight to see these

Thu, 2015-12-03 15:55

Its a sight to see these things free jumping in the middle of the day. Seen it twice in one day last summer, probs 2m outta the water flipping like a mako would do. Crazy shit we should start towing seal decoys behind the yak sammy and get some footage for current affairs to put their crazy spin on it bahaha.

Cool to see someone getting a few, a lot more of them than people realise, but they don't seem to bother anyone swimming.
Great pictures mate, thanks for posting the report.

Fri, 2015-12-04 15:53

Thats interesting i do a bit of bream fishing around Guildford. I was planning on having a go for sharks when im over in January might have a go in the river, these seem i nice size to target for my first foray into shark fishing. I got myself some stepped up gear together anyone catch bulls up there and got any advice for me. Rob90 interesting you think that the wire could be putting them off, ive heard that before do you think theres something in it ?

Gotta be in it to win it,

Fri, 2015-12-04 16:46

Gotta be in it to win it, throw a bait out at night and see what happens. As for the wire theory when ya using the same bait in the exact same spot and  i had two rods out sam had one except he was using mono i had wire, in 1 houre he had two runs and caught the shark i got squat, where as last week i was using mono and i got one but got bitten off and didnt have any replacement gear so i left so i would say that wire some how is spooking them or not presenting the bait propely i dont know, this week im going to try some 100lb mono and hope they dont get through that

 Don't need heavy gear to

Fri, 2015-12-04 16:47

Don't need heavy gear to target these smaller sharks, general purpose 20-30lb spin tackle will get the job done.

If you use wire, I'd suggest light 7 strand wire up to about 100lb, otherwise just 100lb mono leader with circle hooks will land 9/10 sharks up to about 1.5m.

 Yeah the smaller the gear

Fri, 2015-12-04 18:05

Yeah the smaller the gear the more fun, just need good leader to stop the bite factor. They burn their energy with really quick runs and direction changes and jumps. So you dont really need big stopping power. And on a yak the last thing you want is big gear, sam almost found that out the hard way.
